Objectives

This training course aimed to help school staff strengthen their integration skills and train them in order to face the daily difficulties that are present in the classroom. Then it could organize all the material for students to enrich the quality of education in schools and equip young people to live and work successfully in a global society. All this raised standards, improved outcomes in teaching and learning and introduced and embed an international dimension in the curriculum. Participants enhanced techniques or skills that encouraged social and linguistic integration between students of different cultures and they promoted a multicultural school based on peace, tolerance and education for humanity values, to strenghten active citizenship among ethnic minorities. The project created a close partnership between the two Institutions and so they could continue with exchanging of different teaching practices and methods which will make lessons more attractive to students in the future. The project also aimed at increasing knowledge of equal opportunity issues, exploring the principle behind equal opportunity and inclusion, providing practical tips and sharing best practices about how to work together for an inclusive education, making students and teachers familiar with different learning and teaching styles.

Background

The project started from the needs and interest of the school staff and aims to make themselves promoters of their own development in order to provide an active European citizenship. We decided to choose this training course to help our staff to know the innovative methods to integrate immigrant students in our classrooms, to appreciate cultural and human wealth of each others and integrate it in a new multicultural and multiethnic society. Our staff wanted to make immigrants aware of the new reality in order to promote active citizenship, social and working inclusion and to develop multicultural awareness in the "host" country in order to overcome prejudices and stereotypes about immigrants and then fight intolerance and racial discrimination. Schools are important contexts for such processes to take place, also from a developmental and socialpsychological perspective. Schools endorsing cultural pluralism may provide a climate that welcomes and appreciates cultural diversity, and where students and teachers show an interest in the cultural background of ethnic minority students. If, in our school, there will be an emphasis on equality and inclusion, all this will contribute to an overall positive school or classroom climate, making it easier to develop a sense of school belonging for all students. And the main purpose of the project will have been achieved.
