Objectives

Our main objectives have been: > Waken environmental awareness in teachers so that they can act as "facilitators" for their students and at the same time stimulating the active participation of the educational community in solving environmental problems. > Provide teachers with knowledge in the field of environmental education to sustainable development. > Promote the research, sharing, and application of creative strategies in an educational context that promote environmental sustainability by: - educational tools and resources, including evidence-based information, statistics, videos, and practical exercises in the field of environmental education that teachers can adapt to their context; - creation of environmental education activities and their use in educational context inside and outside the classroom; - reflection in large groups and subgroups, according to their subject areas and educational levels, on the best strategies for children and young people to experience and acquire environmental awareness skills. > Empower teachers to carry out “hands-on” upcycling (creative reuse) low-budget activities: these activities using recycled materials will act as a starting point for ongoing work to raise awareness in children and young people about environmental issues. Besides these specific and peculiar objectives of our school organization, there are others with wider scope in order to project our school more and more in European context: • implement strategies and activities for an increasingly inclusive and participatory school; • improve the professional profile of teachers in service at the "Fiorentino" State Institute and consolidate the European dimension of education through the cooperation and exchange of good practices and through the direct observation of other European realities; • exercise one’s own European and planetary citizenship.

Background

Our Project "Environmental education: a planetary priority that passes through Europe" starts by the awareness and the fundamental importance of preserving our planet for future generations, one of the basic objectives of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development in order to focus and take urgent actions to combat climate change and to adopt sustainable behaviors Thus there is a need for a greater ecological and environmental awareness on the part of all of us and above all it becomes fundamental to"educate" the new generations in this sense. The school, in its formative role, cannot be exempt from being a place of election to activate educational projects in this sense, also favoring extensive collaborations to involve institutions, local authorities and all the actors of social life in the common growth process. And the first key action, in this sense, is carried out by the teachers: mainly they can stimulate the students' awareness of being part of a local and global community. There is no planet B and that we must take care of it: it is the unique we have. But although this topic is often addressed by our school, there is still a need for our teachers to have a more specific and systematic training in this regard, as it can be seen from an analysis of training needs carried out recently. The idea is to start from attending a structured training course in Portugal and specifically "Environmental Education - Small Action with Big Impacts": this course was chosen as it is the one that best meets our training needs. In addition, Portugal is a country very attentive to environmental issues and therefore can teach us a lot in environmental terms.
