Background

The researches show that generation gap is a major problem of the society in Europe. Furthemore, most of the education and training systems are still mainly organized around the possibilities for young people, and the existing educational systems still don't reflect enough the elderly people' and Adult educators' needs. The Universities of the Third Ages and similar initiatives bring together the elderly, but only in their own company. Meanwhile, people can fully function only in contact with various forms of social organisation. Personal contact between different generations can reduce prejudices and stereotypes that are at the root of age-discrimination, and reduce social isolation of the elderly. Intergenerational learning is one of the approaches that could be effective to use in this context. It is systematic transfer and interactions of knowledge, skills, competences, wisdom, norms, and values between generations. Different generations should be connected in learning process for their mutual benefit, experience exchange and competencies sharing. Adult educators should be empowered with the tools and knowledge to organise the process of intergenerational exchange more effectively.
