Final report summary

The project has promoted the development of an ethical society where the fundamental values must be the affirmation of democracy, equality, ethics, justice, inclusion, and sustainable development in respect of the human being and our planet. We live in a historical period with the highest rate of innovation ever perceived and experienced, where digital technologies offer immense opportunities but also many risks. In one of the latest reports from the REUTERS INSTITUTE, the "Digital News Report" indicates that so-called "digital natives" consider the internet as their primary source of information. In the age group 18-24, 64% read news online, and in the 25-34 age group, 58% do so. Within these percentages, 33% of the younger generation follows the news through social networks: (Facebook is the absolute first at 47%, followed by YouTube at 22% and Twitter at 10%). It is evident, therefore, that the internet and Facebook will increasingly play a more important role in the field of information in the future. Moreover, multiple sources indicate that the most important means of informing and sharing news are instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, and Instagram. This transition from the use of traditional media to new media carries an increased risk of the possible spread of misinformation: Fake News. This transition can be a serious risk to democracies. In fact, research by the Cybercrime Police and other organizations has shown that politically extreme or populist groups often use the internet and the web in general as a tool to spread their ideas. From this, the idea to develop a project that primarily considered Media Literacy Education, a fundamental element for democracy and the growth of new generations. The project involved three countries: Italy, Romania, and Germany, and five secondary schools, all with many years of experience in the field of Media Literacy and the actions envisaged in the project. In total, 90 students and 25 teachers were involved in the project, with student exchanges as follows: 2 in Italy in Carate B.za (20+20), 1 in Germany (15), 1 in Romania (20), 1 in Italy in Catania (20), plus 2 accompanying teachers per school. There was also a Training Course in Catania (8).The project aimed to stimulate the development of the key competences of the 2006 Lisbon Strategy, in particular: Media Education and the development of critical thinking and the ability to read different media systems: mainstream and new media. Knowledge of the history and culture of European heritage. Collaboration with respect and mutual understanding, promoting social and moral responsibility and solidarity. Competence in online safety for the prevention of cyberbullying. The Activities included: Team building – Logo creation Conference and Workshop: Communication, Propaganda, Journalism ABC/New Media Laboratory: FakeLab Documentary Video Interview Timeline Film Festival Contest Gamification: Escape room Lab: Facebook page/poem/song Visit to the Dresden Museum on fake news Analysis/reflection on hostile words Tangible Results: Timeline Film Festival Documentary Video Dictionary of Hostile Words Newspaper Article Writing CLIL APP/website/Padlet: "Network instructions for correct use" Workshop Facebook Page: Creation of fake news Guides for a day Intangible Results: development of basic Lisbon competences and personal soft skills.
