Objectives

"Alone we go faster, together we go further" or how to transcend the individual to achieve a collective that creates interesting dynamics for the improvement of the social fabric and the quality of life of people. However, being a group and moving forward together is not self-evident. It is essential to have a leader who is worthy of the name, who brings people together, motivates, inspires, facilitates, drives, etc. According to Fortune Magazine's list of the top 100 leaders in the world, a good leader is "a woman or man in business, politics, philanthropy and the arts who changes the world and inspires others to do the same. " But in a globalized society with an increasingly international environment, a traditional leader is no longer enough. In order to influence others, you have to understand them. And when these others are diverse, one must know how to leave one's cultural comfort zone and ethnocentric vision to decentralize and change perspective. The paradox of humans being that they carry a cultural heritage while being unique, it is important not to generalize nor to let oneself be influenced by persistent stereotypes. The leader of the future must therefore be able to pride himself on being an effective leader by being intercultural and showing a willingness to understand differences and demonstrate a certain flexibility, whether it be to manage a group internationally or to value the diversity of human resources at the local level. This is all the more essential as we are witnessing an increasing tendency to withdraw into one's own identity, which is detrimental to the acceptance of others and to active and peaceful coexistence. These skills are not innate but are acquired. There is no natural intercultural leader born to accompany groups, create synergies or instill dynamics. This role is essential for us in order to allow collective action by motivating and supporting the other, this other whose customs and referents are different. It deserves to be worked on early on with young people from a wide variety of backgrounds in order to create a generation of intercultural leaders capable of making a lasting change in the world and leading others to do the same. The youth exchange "How to Develop Leadership in an Intercultural Environment" from August 6 to 14, 2021 in Hamburg aimed to bring together 40 young people from 5 program countries to discuss the concept of intercultural leadership through various fun and interactive activities, to get to know themselves in their leadership and to strengthen the essential skills of an intercultural leader to positively influence others.
