Objectives

"Sustainable Lifestyle in Practice" (SLP) youth exchange was organized because we want to contribute in the creation of a more sustainable and resilient Europe and to succeed in promoting the cultural exchange among young Europeans. We believe that in this historical moment dominated by fear and mistrust, one of the mission that have the "civil society" is to provide alternative visions to the current paradigm. We believe that this project was an opportunity to generate relationships of friendship, solidarity and integration. Furthermore, we hope that the enhancement of manual and artistic skills, conceived as tools of communication, expression and creativity, could provide young Europeans with the tools necessary for their future. After working for years in the educational field we discover the power of non formal education, the learning by doing and the cooperative approach as tool for engaging people to take their responsibility in co building different scenarios. SLP is aim to be a youth exchange addressed to young from Italy, Croatia, Portugal, Spain and Greece selected from organization who are already working with youth in the field of sustainability. We carried this activity in order to create a space of intercultural communication among youngsters and with the local community around us and to engage news volunteer in the local area. We also wanted to give a demonstration of what we live as sustainability, making us participant live a field experience of sharing knowledge about sustainability and regenerative practices. From our background we also noticed that working to strengthening the quality of teaching and learning trough more practical and hands-on approach is useful for young people to concretely understand how to transform their lives into a living example of sustainable practices. Thought this exchange we wanted provides participants with whole systems design skills, analytical abilities and practical tools and contacts to support the redesign of the human presence on Earth, one local community and bioregion at a time. The youth exchange took place in Paternò, a town near Catania, in the region of Sicily (Italy) in May 2022 and will involve 25 participants from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Greece. SLP wanted to create a “learning ecosystem” by using a “learning by doing” approach to create a dynamic and experiential learning environment; non-formal education which balances between active participation and meaningful reflection, synthesis and implementation; the application of permaculture principles and ethics into our daily lifestyle. Group leaders were responsible for promoting and facilitating learning as well as encouraging the team to be self-managing. Thanks to this exchange each participant had the background and confidence to take an active role in designing for sustainability, working for small and large- scale community projects, eco-social enterprises or transition initiatives in civil society, the public sector or business. Our aim is to give the basic instruments to each participant for facilitating others to contribute to the collaborative transformation of their existing communities, institutions and neighbourhoods towards more sustainable and regenerative patterns of production and consumption, at local and international level towards sustainable oriented solutions. Under this sign the SLP project reached these goals: - applyed permaculture ethics and principles in participants daily life and create a design of a sustainable system; - supported young to adapt the framework we provided to use in their personal contexts/organization; - provided practical knowledge linked to the earth and lost practices combined with modern scientific knowledge; - promoted and transmited sustainable practices and regenerative ones bringing new perspectives on the relationship between man and the environment; - strengthened resilience to current system in crisis; - strengthened young peoples' skills and employability; - protected, restored and promoted sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; - promoted cooperation between institutions that exchange young and strengthened the territorial cooperation network.
