Objectives

Millions of women and girls around the world experience physical, verbal, psychological or sexual violence every year, many of them by the hands of husbands or partners. Such violence is a violation of human rights and an extreme form of gender-based discrimination. It deprives women and girls of their dignity, violates their fundamental rights, harms their health, reduces their productivity and prevents them from reaching their full potential. It also has significant consequences for peace and security and a negative impact on the development of society. Over the years, the Municipality of Trissino has developed a sensitivity toward this issue by promoting a decade of events aimed not only at enhancing women's talent and creativity but also at offering moments of reflection on the condition of women. The need to undertake awareness paths addressed to teenagers to act before it is too late, with a view to preventing discriminatory, harmful and violent behaviour arose in the last few years. That’s why the Municipality identified the Erasmus+ program as an ideal tool to involve its young people, with a view to promoting an approach to the topic with a wider scope, of European comparison. The Youth Exchange “The Red Bench” was aimed to paint and decorate a Red Bench, which is now positioned in the main square of the town as a symbol to remember women victims of violence and to give all citizens the opportunity to stop and reflect. The aims of The Red Bench's project were: - to increase awareness and understanding by young people of the various forms of violence - physical and psychological - by learning to recognize the commonplaces, stereotypes and prejudices with which the "culture" that surrounds them is often imbued. - to deepen the knowledge of discriminatory phenomena and violence against women in different countries - to enhance the woman, her skills and potential and reevaluate her role in society - to help young people to understand their emotions, recognise the characteristics of a relationship based on dominance and overpowering and identify alternative ways of relating based on solidarity, mutual respect and constructive resolution of conflicts - to sensitize the local community on the issue of exchange through art and creativity (decoration of the Red Bench, artistic performance) - to offer an opportunity for knowledge and comparison between different perspectives and points of view, to encourage openness and understanding of the other - to make young local people experience a sense of welcome and the ability to value their own territory - to foster the intercultural learning and dialogue as a way of overcoming prejudice
