The project “City Creators: Youth for Europe” aimed at involving the youngsters and the general public in a reflection about citizenship, European identity and the current political challenges affecting young Europeans, moving from a macro reflection, at European level, to the local level, focusing on the local environment and on the power that everyone’s actions can have on it. Participants projected the ideas and experiences lived during the exchange on a physical model: an ideal and utopian city model that represents the city of the future from the point of view of the participants. The first objective of the project proposal was to promote the mobility of young people and to give them a space for meeting and sharing. The project allowed the participants to explore the culture of others, to compare differences and similarities, to experience intercultural dialogue and to acquire useful skills for their personal development and employability. The second purpose of the project was to develop the commitment of young people in their community and to involve them in the democratic life of their country and the European society. The project aimed at raising awareness of belonging to a European community, and to spread European sentiment among young people. Therefore, the objectives of the project were linked in particular to increasing youth participation in democratic life, the acquisition of knowledge and skills of active citizenship, empowerment and civic engagement. The involvement of the boys and girls in concrete activities of volunteering and active citizenship gave the participants the opportunity to develop empathy towards the social and environmental causes supported by citizens, volunteers and workers met, to imagine the application of these virtuous practices in their own communities of origin, to really feel capable of taking action in the first person. The day dedicated to the preparation and simulation of a session of the European Parliament made it possible to understand the functioning of the European institutions, their decision-making processes and their effects on the daily life of European citizens. Participants perceived the importance of everyone's participation in the European public debate, as it is closely connected with the internal dynamics of each member country. By participating in this activity, they were able to recognize the concepts of democracy, the rule of law, freedom, equality and respect for human dignity that characterize European identity, and which constitute the cultural and value background that unites them as European citizens belonging to a unique community. The project contributed to the intercultural dialogue between young people from four different countries, and also from different European regions. An enormous cultural richness emerged; the youngsters were able to learn about traditions, languages, stories very different from their own, within the group of participants but also thanks to the meetings held during the Exchange days. The many workshops and meetings related to different aspects of environmental sustainability have fostered a very articulated reflection on the impact of daily choices and our lifestyles on the environment; on the need to adopt sustainable practices to reduce our ecological footprint, especially in the urban environment, the main focus of the experience.
