Objectives

The first aim of this project was to learn and gain the necessary experience for the successful implementation of a new form of education in our Gymnasium. Our objectives were: - to learn about the education system of Iceland, Finland and Estonia, where experiential education has deep roots and Project work is a traditional form of education; to gain a better understanding of its organisation in the educational process; to apply its best practices in our Gymnasium in order to implement and further develop this model of learning. To develop Project Description. - to develop insufficient professional and personal competences of teachers so they could apply Project method as a systematic form of working. Firstly-competences of foreign language teachers', because they used to apply the projects sporadically, but never as a coherent work including all three parts: theoretical, practical and presentation. To get ideas for the topics of foreign language project, as it was difficult to identify them and to find foreign partners for our students' Project Works. - to meet students' need-to be able to apply their theoretical knowledge into practice; to participate actively in the learning process, and to try out new environments and methods.

Background

Following a quality assessment of the Gymnasium, which showed that our pupils were not very good at applying their theoretical knowledge to practice, a new strategy for the Gymnasium has been formulated-to develop a creative, critical thinker who is able to put aquired knowledge to practice, who is self-confident and ready to act in a wide range of fields to shape the future of Europe. That is why experiential education has become a priority for our Gymnasium. It was decided to start with one of its activities-a complete project work (theoretical part, practical research/creative work and presentation) and introduce it as a compulsory form of learning within the curriculum for pupils of 9-10 forms. This was a completely new area for us.Therefore, we assigned two years for a proper preparation:to understand the concept of experiential education, to develop Description of project work, to create Topic Bank for projects of all subjects as well as to develope insufficient competences of foreing language teachers in order to introduce the new form of education successfully. That is why we decided to learn from European institutions where experiential education has deep roots and Project Work is a traditional form of education.
