Objectives

In the past, Europe had already made great strides in climate change mitigation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, tackling air and water pollution, and introducing policies to tackle plastic waste and the circular economy. In our opinion, despite these achievements, Europe needs to make more progress, and the outlook for the environment in the coming decade needs to be more positive. It is necessary to revise how the sustainability vision of 'living well within the limits of the planet' could be promoted and how changes in consumption models and sustainable ways of living could be encouraged. Various reports and strategies, such as the World Youth Report: Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and surveys such as Eurobarometer 2019, have emphasized the need for active engagement of youth in sustainable development efforts to protect the planet and avert the worst threats including the impacts of climate change. Despite this, young people passionate about environmental protection found a scarcity of opportunities to be eco-active and educate themselves on these matters. In recent years, young people have organized numerous climate change strikes and protests to raise public awareness about the importance of environmental issues. However, they had also encountered the opinion of adults from their communities, parents, teachers, and political representatives that protests were not doing any good. Young people were told that they should stay in the school building and develop their competencies to provide real solutions for climate change issues rather than skip classes in protests. It was thought that eco-action attracting the public's attention was crucial for successful changes individuals and society had to undertake. To find out how this could be done, a group of young people contacted their friends from all over Europe to ask about their most beneficial practices in eco-actions and pro-environmental education activities. We saw how many different and impactful actions individuals and small groups of young people had developed in their localities and how little the public was informed about their endeavors. We believed that gathering them in one community for a short time, giving them space to share their experience among themselves and the wider community, and engaging them in common regional eco-actions would bring significant benefits to them. In addition, it would also positively influence their localities and the whole eco-interested society at the regional and potentially even at the international level. For these reasons, we planned a Youth exchange project to extend awareness about the importance of environmental protection among 40 young Europeans and their peers. During the project, we emphasized the urgency of reducing individual and society's ecological footprint and encouraged them to practice ecological living following the principles of sustainable development. This project involved eight partners with diverse backgrounds, different experiences, and activities evolved concerning the project topic; and lasted 10 intensive working days. During this time, participants had the opportunity to develop environmental competencies, share easily adoptable practices, and first-handly experience eco-actions they could then transfer into their local areas. The objectives of the project were: -Advance participant's knowledge regarding the current environmental threats, particularly the ones present in their communities, - Share an experience in environmental protection and environmental sustainability, best practices, and successful eco-activities from participants' regions, - Share with participants concepts and recommendations on how to reduce individual and society's ecological footprint, suggestions for a more sustainable lifestyle, practical tips for effective recycling, re-using of waste material, saving energy, and minimizing consumption, - Encourage a sense of initiative amongst young people from our regions by revealing the feasible impact of easily manageable eco-actions, - Promote pro-environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyle among young people from our regions. The project met Erasmus+ priorities and anticipated outcomes of its Key Action 1. It contributed to the increasing sense of initiative and self-esteem, improving foreign language competencies, enhancing intercultural awareness, and increasing active social participation among young people. Additionally, the project was linked with the European Commission 2050 long-term strategy - for a climate-neutral Europe.
