“Culture takes diverse forms across time and space. This diversity is embodied in the uniqueness and plurality of the identities of the groups and societies making up humankind. As a source of exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognised and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations.” Article 1 UNSECO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. For a society to become really intercultural, every social group must be able to live in the conditions of equality regardless of their culture, lifestyle or origin. This means reconsidering not only how we interact with cultures which seem strange to our own, but also how we interact with minorities who face many forms of intolerance and discrimination. Intercultural education is one of the main tools we have nowadays to help us take advantage of the opportunities offered by multicultural societies. Lack of intercultural understanding often leads to racial discrimination, intolerance, denigration and violence locally and globally. The nowadays conflicts in the world are sad illustrations of the problems that can arise from an inability to respect and live with other cultures. Intercultural education is also an effective way of addressing the modern phenomena of racism and racial discrimination and intolerance. The initial idea for youth exchange “Beyond Borders' Youth Camp” was a result of cooperation between young and active representatives from the EU countries. Before preparing this application in 2019, all the partner organizations (youth representatives and group leaders) had on-going negotiations about the project issues via skype and emails all together. Then the idea of implementation appeared and we began to put it into life. Firstly every partner has chosen a group leader to be taught about the main topic of the youth exchange and all of them were supplied with all the materials and information to study. It was an important task as in particular group leaders had to implement the youth exchange and organize the main activities with the help of their organizations. The youngsters had a chance to choose the forms and methods to be used to achieve the main objectives. First of all, all the group leaders from partner countries saw the urgent need to promote tolerance and understanding among people of different social, national, educational and cultural background not only in the local level but also spread it worldwide. Contemporary society needs changes and it was the task of youth to bring these changes alive and create the better world today. Nowadays there are lots of social conflicts among people with different backgrounds, nationalities and races. And it made us believe that the society needs changes. That is why we wanted to make up a youth exchange for people from different parts of European Union to share their personal experiences of living in their own country and how the idea of peace among people can be achieved. The most recent surveys in EU show a big distinction of tolerance level in different parts of the European Union and neighboring countries. And that is why we found it important to bring young people from different environments together in one place, give them knowledge of intercultural society and to think about possible steps which can change the situation in a good way. With the youth exchange "Beyond Borders' Youth Camp" we aimed to gather together youngsters from different cultures, backgrounds as we believed that young people are the ground of the community we live in. We believed that this project will help to change attitudes and behaviours of young people towards diversity and discrimination and encourage adults to recognize the value that young people’s contributions bring to society at local, national and international levels. Through the exchange, the participants understood that their differences are enrichment for all of them, and that all of them are part of the common idea of European Identity. The objectives of the youth exchange were: - To enable young people to learn more about their own culture, to deepen their cultural roots and to reaffirm their identity; - To support the development of their common European identity; - To promote the EU values and cooperation under the Erasmus+ scheme; - To inspire local youth to be engaged in similar youth activities and to learn about Erasmus+ programme; - To develop creative thinking, soft skills, of youngsters and youth leaders; - To promote the value of diversity amongst different groups, countries and cultures; - To create a video cultural ad for share objectives and outcomes of the youth exchange by providing an easy-tounderstand, informative and enjoyable summary in a popular and innovative way.
