Project summary

The project aims to foster joint initiatives of several organizations working in the field of sustainable transport and urban mobility, as well as sustainable community reselience related to covid19 pandemic. The idea that the participating organizations cooperate in the exchange of good practices and developing of innovative tools in difficult times, regarding the development of today's basic skills and competencies needed to assure safer, faster and healthier mode of transport in times of pandemic. The project will be encouraging adults to learn skills, and be opened to new attitudes towards that can help them throughout their lives both in professional terms and in terms of their own lifestyle. The project predicts both digital ways on how to stimulate adults to use their bicycles more as a resilience mechanism in relation to COVID19 situation, but also to provide them with needed skills, and knowledge on how to maintain and take care of their bicycles. This will be realized by delivery of artistic workshops through which bicycles and maintenance will be promoted in a fun, participatory and interactive way. This context created the setting to work together to come up with a project that would try to bring positives out of a crisis by providing adults with a learning opportunity that will empower and assist them (assembling and repairing bicycles) and work with artists to develop skills in a new medium (artistic bicycle painting a)s an approach for motivation to learn more about the bicycles and their functionalities). The idea is to motivate people to join open air artistic workshops on which maintenance and repair courses/workshops will be delivered as well. The resulting products will be auctioned in events within the scope of the project and gathered in a publication in which maintenance courses/modules will be presented through the prism of art. The project was thus designed with the following objectives: - (Objective 1) Empower adults in learning a valuable new (basic) skill: bicycle assembly, repairs and maintenance in terms of both introducing them to a skill that will enable them to easily overcome certain challenges in the time of pandemic, but also to adapt an environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle. - (Objective 2) Develop skills in artists in a new medium for them (bicycle frames and other parts design and painting) that they can use as a new/supplementary source of income in time of pandemics. As it is known, a lot of fo professions faced serious economic challenges, and one of them is the artist profession of any type. (Target group 1): Adults, and adult artists The project will be aiming to empower these individuals by teaching them valuable skills in the assembly, repair and maintenance of bicycles that they can use in order to either sell services to supplement their income or in order to search for employment in the field (artists) or to motivate them to start to use, or more frequent use the bicycle as their main mode of transportation. T -Preparation of Intellectual output consisting of two main parts: a) basic maintenance and repair tips and tricks for adults, and b) inclusion of art in the cycling field as a potential tool for promotion of cycling among adults (including families) and as a potential extra income for artists affected by the Covid19 pandemic. The IO will be delivered in two ways: through videos - 10 in total, and courses -10 in total, available for both computers and mobile phones (mobile app will be produced, available on Google Play Store). - Delivery of 3 multiplier events in 3 countries: each event will be delivered outdoors and under all existing protocols at the given time. The multiplier events will be organized as full day events where art will meet bicycles, where adults and families can attend workshops on how to maintain and repair your bicycle, but also where adults can bring their bicycles in order for them to be beautified by the local artists through various modes of expression - painting, stickers etc. The kind of artistic expression lies in the hand of the partner organisation and the local participants, it can be everything from film or theatre, dancing or singing to painting and statuary - as accompanying parts of the events. -Delivery of local workshops (smaller version of the multiplier events), which will occur 3 times per country, prior to the release of the Intellectual Output of the project. These workshops will also be delivered outdoors and will have the goal to present certain parts of the intellectual output as they are being developed, thus involving adults and artists during the whole duration of the project. these events will be organized by each partner organization, in close collaboration with local cycling initiatives and artists. All of the organizations that will deliver the workshops will be obliged to document them in a way they think is suitable and attractive enough for the audience (video, painting, etc.

Objectives

The project was thus designed with the following objectives: - (Objective 1) Empower adults in learning a valuable new (basic) skill: bicycle assembly, repairs and maintenance in terms of both introducing them to a skill that will enable them to easily overcome certain challenges in the time of pandemic, but also to adapt an environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle. *This objective was met with the development and dissemination of the IO 1: Opening Possibilities for adult cyclists and artists PART A – BIKE BASICS FOR URBAN CYCLISTS. As part of this manual the adults targeted within the project were presented with the most common information so they can be well prepared with basic knowledge and skills while riding, and maintaining their bicycle. This objective Besides the PART A Narrative part (manual) consisting of 5 topics/courses with accompanying activities, and recording of 7 educational videos was delivered as well (originally 5 videos were planned for PART A). The videos were initially planned to serve as a tool for adults, but the topics they cover and the language that was used is suitable for other target groups such as : youngsters, teachers, educators, and even children. Links to the Narrative PART A and its accompanying 5 videos are provided in the description of the IO1 – Opening possibilities for adult cyclists. - (Objective 2) Develop skills in artists in a new medium for them (bicycle frames and other parts design and painting) that they can use as a new/supplementary source of income in time of pandemics. *This objective was met through the development of the PART B – HOW TO DISSASEMBLE AND ASSEMBLE YOUR BICYCLE FOR RESTORATION AND CUSTOMIZATION. The PART B consisted of development of manual with 5 courses and accompanying activities, and recording of 5 educational videos meant for artists, adult cyclists and all other bike enthusiasts. As it is known, a lot of professions faced serious economic challenges in the past years, and one of them is the artist profession of any type. Within the project time frame adults and adult artists were empowered by teaching them valuable skills in the assembly, repair and maintenance of bicycles that they can use in order to either sell services to supplement their income or in order to search for employment in the field (artists) or to motivate them to start to use, or more frequent use the bicycle as their main mode of transportation. Links to the Narrative PART A and its accompanying 5 videos are provided in the description of the IO1 – Opening possibilities for adult cyclists

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a number of shifts in the daily habits of people across Europe. A significant increase in people cycling has been one change that the organisations involved notices and has been otherwise confirmed in the media (see “Chain reaction: commuters and cities embrace cycling in COVID-19 era”, available at: https://www.euronews.com/2020/05/12/chain-reaction-commuters-and-cities-embrace-cycling-in-covid-19-era). The increase in cycling has been significant enough to actually cause shortages in the supply (see, for instance, “COVID-19 causes 'bike explosion' as Germans long for a ride”, available at: https://www.dw.com/en/covid-19-causes-bike-explosion-as- germans-long-for-a-ride/a-53905967, and “Coronavirus cycling boom makes a good bike hard to find”, available at: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/may/09/coronavirus- cycling-boom-makes-a-good-bike-hard-to-find). At the same time, the crisis has hit the cultural and creative sectors particularly hard (leading to the creation of this call for applications). The resulting products will be auctioned in events within the scope of the project and gathered in a publication (digital and printed in small quantities) in which maintenance courses/modules will be presented through the prism of art.
