Objectives

Through this project, the participants that took part in the 3 youth workers' mobilities, managed to be more empowered through the sharing and exchange of knowledge on how to organise awareness-raising initiatives about the cultural aspects, historical value and mystical attributes of burial grounds. Taking the starting point that cemeteries and other burial sites, especially the artefacts found therein, point to the past and evoke history are also the material anchors of all of our narratives about the past. Through this starting point the creation of lasting identities via the identification of the different cultural heritage participants could identify the similarities between the different cultures, further assisting in eliminating the barriers of cultures which are evidenced even during our work as youth workers. The participants through their active participation were able to understand methodologies and ideas which will be used as awareness tools during their work. Understanding that by caring for their cultural heritage, communities overcome differences and strengthen social cohesion. Culture is a synonym for diversity. When culture is promoted, tolerance results, as well as the ability to accept the own and to embrace the other. Knowing that pluralism, free speech, democracy, human rights and equal development opportunities are threatened around the world, through the project the participants understood that understanding history and cultural heritage assists in making a strong, resilient society. Having as the main objective the empowerment of youth workers and understanding that The European Union was set up to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace, taking into consideration that this same union is threatened by far-right populist parties which seek to exclude those who supposedly do not embrace the same values and beliefs upheld by the citizens of that country. They do so by claiming that these people, the main migrants, are a threat to society’s values, and hence to stability, prosperity and to one’s own identity. Though this project it served as a challenge for the participants to identify and share knowledge on methodologies which can be used through cultural heritage, exploring differences, meditating, and understanding, that by means of the organised study visits to cemeteries and graveyards, participants could understand that country’s culture, values and beliefs can be tools for the much-needed processes of dialogue and reconciliation across social and national borders., through the empowerment of youth workers to further understand cultural heritage and cultural understanding and involving more minority youths for better integration of all society.
