'Green Is The New Black' addressed the ugly realities associated with fast fashion such as the exploitation of workers, the negative impact on the environment and an increase in mindless consumerism. Moreover, the project seeks to recognise the key role that young people have in the building a more sustainable future and challenge the established beauty standards towards a more positive self image. In response to this, the project presented young people with environmental friendly alternatives, such as clothes swapping, buy from second-hand shops, support fair trade stores and encouraged them to recycle and up-cycle clothes providing them with knowledge and basic skills on how to achieve this. We wanted to break the stereotype that people who opt for such alternatives are about those clothes being are poor people and give space to creative self expression. The problem presented with fast fashion is a current and global one and has a tremendous affect on the environment and decent livelihood of people around the world. This is also relevant for the Maltese archipelago. Being a small island with a high population density and limited natural resources finding sustainable ways to live is of crucial importance. The young people who participated to the youth exchange learnt to think more critically about fashion ideals, understand the controversial aspects related to this industry and become more responsible consumers. The impact of the project will be seen in young people setting their own definition of beauty in expressing their own unique style in an environmental friendly way and become active participants in the change that is required to safeguard our natural resources and create a just society where everyone can live in dignity. The goals for the project were: 1: To instil positive self image of young people, challenge the stereotypes of who we should be and provide space for self-expression. 2: To recognise the importance/responsibility of young people in building a sustainable future. 3: To learn about what actions young people need to take to safeguard the natural environment.
