Mental health plays an important role in the life of every person. A mentally healthy person works more productively, as well as is more able to contribute to his/her surroundings. It’s, hence, clear that mental disorders can lead to serious problems & wasted human potential. A mental disorder is a health condition involving changes in thinking, emotion, or behavior (e.g. depression). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than a quarter of the European adult population has experienced at least one mental disorder in the past year, e.g. depression or anxiety. Yet, only a fraction of them has ever asked for (professional) help. Mental disorders have a significant impact not only on the individuals but the burden continues to grow with significant economic consequences. Thus, it is important to bring the issues to light and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. The core goal of the current project "Be Kind to Your Mind" was to increase knowledge about mental health between the youngsters and the public overall. In order to reach this aim, the following objectives have been set: 1) Raising awareness about the existing mental health situation; 2) Reducing prejudices towards mentally ill; 3) Defining what is mental health and why it’s important; 4) Explaining how mental disorders are diagnosed and treated; 5) Advising youth how to live a healthier lifestyle and cope with the surrounding stress; 6) Finding ways of communicating with people having a mental disorder and ways to support them. Besides, the project allowed the participating youngsters to develop their: 1) communication and 2) intercultural skills; 3) analytical and 4) education skills through a range of workshops and exercises (see schedule attached). After completing this program, the participants have the following competencies: 1) knowledge about mental health and related issues, 2) ways to cope with surrounding stress & maintain/improve mental well-being; and 3) awareness of how to help themselves & people around them in case of mental disorder. In order to increase public understanding about mental health (and the surrounding stigma), the following steps were taken during the project: - Before the project: social media (Instagram, Facebook) posts to attract the participants and to raise social awareness to the topic; - During the project: posts and stories on social media about the project’s implementation. Also, a public event & social media campaign; - After the project: results of the project were published locally, nationally, and across the participating countries in the form of articles/posts at different media (see more in further sections). In conclusion, we seek that the results of the project would be long-term: 1) help to increase mental health awareness as much as possible, and 2) reduce the social stigma for those seeking help.
