Pedagogy and didactics

Objectives

To improve the CLIL skills of the teachers who teach in English in our bilingual departments (Havo and VWO). Some of the teachers who are teaching the new bilingual havo classes have little to no professional experience with the CLIL didactics that are already being used in the English-language courses at the bilingual atheneum at our school. To broaden this towards HAVO, it is therefore necessary for inexperienced teachers to become acquainted with this CLIL teaching methodology. Additionally, after two years of Covid it is important that more experienced teachers have their knowledge refreshed. The course in Cork, Ireland allowed for total immersion in the English language as well exposure to English/Irish culture which is essential to ensure develpoment of the English language skills of our teachers. This CLIL-course also provided job-shadowing at an Irish co-educational secondary school which is an invaluable experience for teachers.

Background

To improve the CLIL skills of the teachers who teach in English in our bilingual departments (Havo and VWO). Some of the teachers who are teaching the new bilingual havo classes have little to no professional experience with the CLIL didactics that are already being used in the English-language courses at the bilingual atheneum at our school. To broaden this towards HAVO, it is therefore necessary for inexperienced teachers to become acquainted with this CLIL teaching methodology. Additionally, after two years of Covid it is important that more experienced teachers have their knowledge refreshed. When applying for this grant we planned on using CLIL Cumbria, in the UK. However, Brexit came along and made it impossible for us to use this funding in England. We therefore went in search of a suitable course in the EU. We found the Bilingual Education Projects, based in the Netherlands, which offered a course in Cork, Ireland. Amanda van Dijk, the owner of this company, has extensive experience in CLIL coaching and is an eTwinning assessor for Nuffic.
