The purpose of an international internship is to prepare a student for an international labor market, but it also aims to offer more challenges for the intern and to make him or her even more valuable to an employer in the Netherlands and abroad. After all, the extra competences that are gained with an international internship are valuable both in the Netherlands and abroad. Without an Erasmus+ subsidy, an international internship would not be possible for most students. The GLR focuses on the student in the subsidized international experiences. The GLR can still pay for the most international experiences for teachers and staff from its own resources, but this is not possible for students. After all the years in which the GLR has been active internationally, international internships in particular have become a matter of course. This also ensures a more international mindset among the teachers.

Other competences are obtained with an international internship. Employers recognize this. That is why the GLR is not only active internationally with international internships, but also with international projects, with or without ERASMUS+ subsidies. Erasmus+ subsidy makes it possible for many students to gain international experience.
