Objectives

Highlighting outdoor activities is of crucial importance for the health, academic/career achievement, social emotional intelligence, as well as social behaviors for youth. Nevertheless, youth involvement in physical and sport activities differs from country to country. Recent studies conducted by Eurostat states, that some 44% of the EU population aged 15 or over reported that they practiced sport, fitness or recreational (leisure) physical activities at least once a week. However, discrepancies between countries were very large — the proportion ranged from over 70 % in Nordic countries and Austria to around 10 % or less in Bulgaria and Romania. The time spent on physical activities differs as well. Going into details, more than 50% of people aged 18-64 and more spend at least 150 minutes/week (minimum required index by the WHO) on physical activities in Nordic countries, whereas not only 10% does so in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, etc. This lead to Moreover, around one-fourth of breast and colon cancers, diabetes and approximately 30% of ischemic heart disease are estimated to be caused by physical inactivity. What is more, approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity). Based on several reports provided by WHO combined with Eurostat statistics across Europe, we can surely conclude, that a big proportion of Europeans are at risk regarding their health conditions. Science shows that taking part in sport and physical activities benefits individuals, society and the economy - both directly and indirectly. Recent scientific findings highlight, that significant impact of outdoor education comprises better self-confidence, inspiration towards learning, feel of responsibility and a greater connection between students. Studies have shown that students who learn outdoors develop: a sense of self-confidence, independence, confidence, creativity, decision-making and problem-solving skills, empathy towards others, motor skills, self-discipline and initiative. Outdoors learning experiences are the foundation of raising the next generation of active citizens who take care of their natural and human communities. These statistics highlight the importance of promoting physical activity and boosting outdoor activities through non-formal education methods. This led our consortium of partners from Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Armenia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and Belarus to develop a training course for youth workers and educators. The aim of the project is to advance youth workers’/educators’ skills and competencies in planning, preparing, implementing, and evaluating efficient educational outdoor activities, thus promoting outdoor learning as a tool for physical/mental health, establishing sense of active citizenship and leadership skills among youth.
