The project aimed at raising awareness on discrimination through active involvement and dialogue. It gave participants the opportunity to find creative solutions, such as pieces of puzzles, for fighting stereotypes and prejudices while valuing cultural diversity. Participants with various European backgrounds came together in an informal environment, learning from each other's cultures and working together to achieve concrete goals. As a direct result of the daily interaction through the process of non-formal education, they developed skills to diminish the impact of stereotypes, which often lead to discrimination. Their thoughts and concrete results were also discussed with officials from the House of Europe and the Ministry of Social Affairs in The Hague. Participants shared their concrete suggestions for fighting discrimination and got feedback on their ideas. Through these meetings, we aimed at encouraging participants to play an active role in society by trying to find solutions to the daily problems they are confronted with. At the end of the programme, after spending time together, exchanging opinions and cooperating for achieving certain goals, many of their initial stereotypes and prejudices were demolished. Participants went home being friends and with a more realistic image about each other. The project raised awareness on the issue of discrimination among European youngsters, developing skills and knowledge to better tackle thinking patterns connected to these topics. It aimed at achieving respect for national cultures and values, challenging stereotypes and prejudices. It showed the importance for young people and those working with them to come in direct contact, to work together to achieve concrete tasks and to better understand the cultural diversity in Europe. Participants agreed that, working together to create the puzzles and other project tasks, was an opener for their minds, broke stereotypes and helped them learn new things about other countries and people. The main objectives of the project were: - to explore stereotypes and prejudices of different natures and develop skills on breaking them; - to learn how it feels to be labelled; - to understand how negative attitudes are born; - to empathise with people/groups that are stereotyped; - to recognise own and others stereotypical and prejudicial attitudes; - to become aware of the negative consequences of stereotypes in youth work; - to develop competencies of challenging negative labels during youth activities; - to improve participants’ competences, knowledge and skills in identifying stereotyping patterns and learn how to act when people are prejudiced or discriminating; - to become aware of the gradual development schema: stereotype-prejudice-discrimination and explore each concept; - to develop creative tools; - to reflect on European topics (cultural diversity, European integration, intercultural learning, respect for different countries and values). Looking back at the achievements of the exchange, they were best summed-up in the words of one participant: "If you are trying to break a stereotype then you as a young person, can try to be friends with people with other cultures from other states and you will probably end at the conclusion that people are amazing in their own way - but first you must know them before you are trying to judge them". An example of description of the project in 10 words, made by one of the groups, also gives information on the project impact and achievements: Broadening; Bonding; Development; Diversity; Unique; Valuable; Educative; Inspiring; Productive; Helpful. Some conclusions expressed by youngsters at the end of the exchange: "This wonderful project gave me the opportunity to meet a multitude of unique people. We had many activities where we formed groups and worked together. I learned so many things about them but at the same time about myself, I also understood how important communication and understanding between people is. I hope that the friendships made in this project will remain intact forever. I am glad I had the chance to participate, I will never forget the experiences I had here and the memories I created." (E. Grigorescu). "The project was a unique and beneficial experience for my personal development, offering me many lessons through the interactions between everyone, from all the participating countries. I learned how important communication and teamwork are, and I also discovered curiosities and wonderful things about each culture. I am glad that I had the chance to participate in this project, which gave me new perspectives on life and on my future." (F. Bachnoe). The project was initially planned with two activities. Due to objective reasons, the second activity could not be implemented, the full pursuing of the original objectives being affected. While the aims of the exchange were achieved, the integration of its results in a training could not be realised.
