Objectives

We wanted to learn about the Estonian way of building traditional houses. And to meet the students in Hiiumaa, and learn about their country and culture. Since we have had an exchange-programme and visit from Estonia since 2018, we wanted to visit them and strenghten the connection we have between the two schools.

Background

Hjerleid handverksskole has since 2018 had an exchange-program with Hiiumaa vocational school in Estonia. Hiiumaa has sent students to learn Norwegian lafting-tecniques every year for 3-4 weeks, except for the Pandemia-years. Our teachers has visited Hiiumaa, and their staff has been here, so we have developed very good connections. Both schools work with traditional handcraft, and both schools has some adult students, so we have much in common, and much to learn from eachother. We applied for a grant for the whole class of timberingstudents in 2020. Then we had 10 students. Because of the pandemia we could not travel before March 2023, and we had 14 students and 2 teachers to follow them. We also received 4 Hiiumaa-students and their teacher for 3 weeks in April-May this year.
