Objectives

The project was developed in response to the needs of the partner organisations and their staff, and these needs include building dialogue with and among young people. Together with the partners, we have diagnosed that young people find it difficult to express themselves and establish authentic contact between themselves and adults. This phenomenon exists in real life and on the Internet. We have also diagnosed the need to improve communication within the organisation's teams at the level of conflict resolution. To ensure the sustainability and dissemination of the results, we checked whether similar problems exist outside our organisations and countries (focusing on the situation of young people). Among many new studies, we found consistency with the problems and needs of our organisations. Here we cite a recent UNICEF report which states that "half of all students worldwide aged 13-15 - that's nearly 150 million young people - report having experienced violence from their peers on or near their educational institution". In response to these problems and needs, together with partners and participants, we decided to deepen the competences in the field of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), which, contrary to what the name says, is not just a communication technique, but a set of beliefs and attitudes, where the intention is essential, as well as reaching, naming and expressing one's needs. How does the expression of needs relate to violent behaviour? The violence that manifests itself in bullying, peer aggression, conflict is born when suffering people do not know how to express their pain when they cannot reach what they are hiding inside (Andrew Schmookler). You can learn about NVC from books, and, as the author of the concept, Rosenberg himself, says, it is a simple and not easy method - simple in concept, but not easy in practice, and practice is the keyword here. NVC has to be practised and experienced in order to bring results, i.e. dialogue with people, in which we contribute to improving our own and others' quality of life. Without the guidance of an experienced trainer, it is easy to fall into the NVC trap, which distorts the idea of building an empathic connection in order to take care of each other's needs. That is why we invited a certified CNVC trainer to lead the training in the project "3C: Connection-Compassion-Contact". The participants and partners themselves requested this method, 10 of whom participated in our Foundation's international trainings, which featured elements and workshops based on the NVC. Participants noted its power, efficiency, effectiveness but also pointed out that the time was insufficient to practice and explore the essence of NVC (usually 2 training days), many questions remained unanswered. One of the criticisms of the method is that it is an exclusive model, for a select few with the right level of education, difficult to access for some (in terms of training). Our project responds to this criticism by equipping with knowledge and skills more people who will spread the idea of NVC in their communities. They might never have learned about NVC and could not benefit from its advantages in other circumstances. The main aim of our project was to improve the quality of youth work in the participating organisations and the long run beyond them by increasing the competence of staff in communication, conflict management and building a community based on European values. We achieved this goal by implementing the following specific objectives: - to organise a training on Nonviolent Communication (NVC): basic assumptions, application, pitfalls and adaptation of tools for the work context. - to initiate empathy groups and dissemination meetings in all participating countries - to produce a publication for running empathy group meetings, openly licensed and promoted online and offline to educators, staff and youth leaders - to invite partners to share experiences: difficulties, and successes of their work in different contexts. - to create a community and to initiate the building of a NVC community in youth work - to create space for international partnerships, including partners from and outside Europe (Eastern Partnership and EUROMED countries).
