"EAST - European Academy of Social Transformation" is an initiative designed by young people from Central and Eastern Europe to pay attention of European audiences to the uniqueness of the multicultural history of this part of the continent. Activities planned under the project will take place mainly in Warmia and Mazury - a unique region where social mechanisms for peaceful coexistence of various cultural and ethnic minorities can be an important material for promoting intercultural dialogue in Europe. The main goal of the project will be implementation of innovative photographic and film workshops in a unique cultural environment that will allow the creative use of the potential of undiscovered and unknown spaces of Warmia and Masuria among young people from countries whose fates intertwine around the complicated history of the region (Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine). The idea of the project - international youth exchange, presenting on the example of Warmia and Mazury the complicated history of Central and Eastern Europe, was created as part of informal discussions conducted on the Internet by young creators of culture associated in individual partner organizations and implementing international projects in the field of audiovisual education. It is worth noting that young people living in this part of Europe are still deprived of convenient opportunities for mutual cooperation and live in an area heavily crossed by border walls. The task of the project will be to emphasize the common cultural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe, to overcome artificial social barriers set out by national borders, to counteract social exclusion (e.g. regarding talented youth from Belarus and Ukraine) and to animate creative activities aimed at building an open society and aware of its role in the European community . One of the goals of the project will be to document and spread knowledge about the unique character of Warmia and Mazury as a place that is an excellent example of the peaceful coexistence of cultural minorities and to remind Europeans about the disappearing material and immaterial heritage of this area. Warmia and Mazury are a unique space with autonomous cultural specificity and local identity. Identity threads in this region are important because before World War II it was very diverse in terms of culture, and after the war - as a result of political decisions and changes in Poland's borders - there were significant demographic changes. Over 70,000 people left their homes, emigrating to Germany. At the same time, settlers from central Poland, displaced persons from the former Eastern Borderlands, Ukrainian settlers and Lemkos and smaller ethnic groups, such as Lithuanians and Belarusians, came here. As a result of demographic changes, there was a rapid contact of native people and post-migration communities from geographically and culturally distant areas. Despite this, over time it has been possible to create a coherent social structure in this area, devoid of deeper antagonisms and national conflicts. As part of the project, young people will explore the unique history of the region and the social processes accompanying historical events. The implementation of activities based on attractive audiovisual tools will awaken young people's interest in the multicultural history of Warmia and Mazury, will save from forgetting the valuable tradition of these areas and integrate participants around the search for manifestations of national cultures in the universal heritage of the region. The project will contribute to presenting the specificity of this part of Europe to the inhabitants of Western Europe, help to understand the complexity of local history and indicate positive sources of inspiration. An important goal of the project will be to document the deteriorating material heritage of Warmia and Mazury, which requires care and information and promotion activities. As a result of the project, photographic cycles and short film etudes will be created, the aim of which will be artistic interpretation of selected threads from the history of Warmia and Mazury and the fate of the local society functioning at the interface of Polish, Lithuanian, Belarusian and Ukrainian cultures. The project will be a new and original voice on the subject of migration currently widely discussed. As part of the project - by referring to universal historical contexts - threads concerning cultural diversity within Europe will be analyzed and an attempt will be made to define the conditions for effective integration of social groups diversified in terms of, among others culture, religion and traditions. On the one hand, the project will promote the unique cultural heritage of Warmia and Mazury, and on the other hand it will promote universal social values developed in this region and which can be an example for the entire united Europe torn apart by conflicts based on nationality.
