Project summary

AIM OF THE PROJECT is implementation of comprehensive approach to the analysis, planning, protection and use of historic buildings through the use of BIM in teaching students in field of architecture. Topic of project is introduction of BIM (Building Information Modeling) system and software to the process of teaching heritage protection at studies in field of architecture. BIM software is generally used in design of new facilities. However, the use of BIM software for historic buildings creates additional opportunities. First of all, it enables inclusion of inventory / documentation prepared using laser scanning to the design process. Laser scanning makes it possible to perform a very accurate inventory of historic objects (3D models), which "incorporated" into BIM software becomes the base documentation for planning and designing conservation, renovation and adaptation works. The use of laser scanning for inventory, visualization and assessment of technical condition of historic buildings significantly reduces the time of these works and their costs. Project consists in adapting methods of documentation, analysis and design in historical objects to the approach created by BIM system and to use the possibilities of BIM software. The use of BIM system and software will enable inclusion of scattered activities performed at historic buildings - inventory, documentation, analysis, design, visualization - within a coherent system. Adaptation of BIM system and design to the specificity of historic buildings creates a method of action that should be called Heritage BIM. Purpose of introducing Heritage BIM course is to adapt didactics to the needs of practice - currently the needs of design offices, and - in the near future - also contractors and persons managing the use of buildings. PARTNER UNIVERSITIES: • Politechnika Lubelska, Poland • Politecnico di Milano, Italy • Vysoke Uceni Technicke v Brne, Czech Republic NON-ACADEMIC PARTNERS: • TMSys, Poland • Harpaceas, Italy, • Allplan Česko, Czech Republic. Partnership is complementary, each partner brings significant added value to project. ACTIVITIES: WP1: 1.1 Analysis of BIM software in order to select parameters defining a building object, which should be specified and analysed in Sheet of the Technical Condition Assessment for the Historic Building 1.2 Development of Sheet of the Technical Condition Assessment for the Historic Building, which will contain parameters necessary to design the object in BIM software and the scope of information necessary to describe these parameters 1.3 Development of Instruction of Historic Buildings Inventory that will allow the use of laser scanning and other forms of object documentation to obtain parameters needed to restore building in BIM software WP2: 2.1. Inventory of selected historic buildings based on materials developed in WP1 - obtaining data for reconstruction of objects in BIM software 2.2. Creation of BIM models for protection and development of selected historic buildings 2.3 Elaboration of syllabus for Heritage BIM 2.4. Elaboration of handbook for Heritage BIM course showing all stages of documentation for protection and development of historic building in BIM software WP3: 3.1 Training of academic teachers who will conduct Heritage BIM course 3.2 Pilot implementation of Heritage BIM course at partner universities 3.3 Development of the final version of syllabus and Heritage BIM course manual based on conclusions of pilot implementations. INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS: • O1 Sheet of the Technical Condition Assessment for the Historic Building • O2 Instruction of Historic Buildings Inventory • O3 Didactic material - inventory patterns of selected types of monuments • O4 Syllabus for Heritage BIM course • O5 Handbook presenting all stages of documentation for the protection and development of historic buildings in BIM software. TRAINING ACTIVITIES: Short-term joint staff trainings on: • 3D laser scanning • modelling in BIM • design of historic buildings in BIM. RESULTS EXPECTED ON PROJECT'S COMPLETION: • Educational offer of Partner universities adjusted to current requirements of labour market - the course Heritage BIM introduced into the curricula offered • EU universities introducing the course Heritage BIM into the curricula offered • Intensive course Heritage BIM offered by non-academic for professional designers • Permanent cooperation network • Continuous transfer of knowledge, experiences and good practice • Strengthened research capacity of Partner universities Achieving project results will contribute to tackling skill gaps and missmatches, as well as to development of relevant and high-quality skills and competences not only in countries participating in the project, but in the entire Europe.

Objectives

The project Hertige BIM focuses on integrating BIM system and software into teaching heritage protection. While BIM is commonly used for designing new buildings, its application in historic buildings offers unique opportunities. By incorporating laser scanning data, precise inventories of historic structures can be created. These 3D models serve as a foundational document for planning conservation, renovation, and adaptation efforts, significantly reducing time and costs. The project involves adapting documentation, analysis, and design methods for historical objects to align with the capabilities of the BIM system and software. By integrating scattered activities such as inventory, documentation, analysis, design, and visualization into a cohesive system, the project establishes a method termed Heritage BIM. The introduction of a Heritage BIM course aims to align education with industry needs, catering not only to design offices but also future demands from contractors and building managers. This initiative ensures that teaching practices remain relevant and practical, meeting the evolving requirements of the architectural profession.

Background

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is transforming the design and construction of buildings, facilitating seamless collaboration through specialised software. It enables real-time updates, streamlines tasks and sets a global standard across industries. Universities are adapting curricula, moving from 2D to 3D+ design to meet the demand for graduates with BIM skills. BIM streamlines historic building projects by integrating laser scanning data, reducing time and cost. Universities are adapting curricula to meet the demand for BIM-proficient graduates, transitioning from 2D to 3D+ design. The technology prompted the introduction of the Heritage BIM course, filling a skills gap highlighted in surveys such as ManPower Group's Talent Shortage Survey 2018. Our project addressed the needs of the academic community and aimed to enhance digital skills in this area. Through problem-solving, engaging professionals from the BIM industry, innovation, and sustainable development, educational programs tailored to contemporary needs were developed. Customized solutions were formulated based on specific case studies, serving as practical academic and teaching materials.
