Project summary

OBJECTIVES The primary goal is to allow organisations to develop and reinforce networks, increase their capacity to operate at transnational level, share and confront ideas, practices and methods in innoavative filed, which is Mixed Reality (MR) for educational purpose. The simulation of medical procedures through MR system offers an opportunity to train medical students, paramedics and doctors across a range of specialists in a safe (risk-free), realistic and repeatable environment. It eliminates harmful consequences to patients and offers repeatable procedures. Mixed Reality specific Strategic Partnership formats may be realized under School Exchange Partnerships umbrella. The projects can use mobility opportunities for students and staff to help the participating medical schools develop as organisations and increase their ability to work in international projects. Combination mobility and physical exchanges with virtual cooperation is strongly encouraged. HORIZONTAL PRIORITIES - Supporting opportunities for all medicine students (who cannot participate in on-site exercises for their personal health reasons and, for example, due to social isolation during a pandemic) in acquiring and developing key competences, including clinical skills, for example: history-taking, physical examination, clinical investigations, using diagnostic reasoning, procedural perfection, effective communication, team work and professionalism. - Supporting teachers, medical doctors working with students, educational leaders and medical staff in the use of advanced teaching and e-learning methods using a MR (VR and AR). TEACHING AND ASSESSING CLINICAL SKILLS BASED ON MIXED REALITY: 1. Teaching human anatomy 2. Assessing of clinical skills 3. Teaching surgical procedures from a first-person perspective 4. Trauma room simulation 5. Psychological assessment of using mixed reality VIRTUAL PATIENTS BASED ON MIXED REALITY: Proper medical training is not easy and cheap. Virtual patients provide the opportunity to practice interactive skills such as taking a patient’s history, diagnosing medical disorders and prescribing medications while receiving quantitative and qualitative feedback. Research and development efforts continue to expand the world of MR medical training by enhancing the readiness of medical trainees to interact successfully with real patients, increasing the availability of training resources for larger numbers of trainees, and increasing patient safety.

Objectives

By implementing the "Mixed Reality Supporting Advanced Medical Education" project, we aim to achieve the following: 1. Enhanced Medical Training: We wish to provide medical students, paramedics, and doctors with a state-of-the-art training platform that offers a realistic representation of medical procedures without any associated risks. This safe, repeatable environment will ensure that practitioners can hone their skills to perfection before applying them in real-world scenarios. 2. Global Collaboration & Networking: By reinforcing networks and increasing the capacity of organizations to operate on a transnational level, we hope to foster a global community of medical professionals and educators who can share, learn, and grow together, pushing the boundaries of medical education. 3. Inclusivity in Education: In light of challenges like pandemics, we want to ensure that all medical students, irrespective of their personal constraints, have access to essential clinical training. Mixed Reality offers a solution that bridges the gap between traditional on-site exercises and the need for remote, yet immersive, training experiences. 4. Empowering Educators: We aim to equip teachers, medical staff, and educational leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to utilize MR technologies effectively. This will not only enhance the teaching process but also ensure that students receive the most contemporary and effective training possible. 5. Research & Development in MR Medical Training: By leveraging the capabilities of Mixed Reality, we want to continuously advance the methodologies and tools available for medical training. This includes expanding on virtual patient interactions, trauma simulations, and understanding the psychological implications of MR training. 6. Cost-Effective Training: With the development and implementation of virtual patients, we aim to provide a cost-effective solution to medical training that doesn't compromise on the quality of education. We hope that this project will enrich and improve education medical education by integrating MR technology and traditional teachings, fostering a global community of well-trained medical professionals who are prepared to face the challenges of modern medicine with confidence and expertise.

Background

In the continuously evolving world of medical education, the emergence of Mixed Reality (MR), especially through Hololens holograms, presented an opportunity to improve the learning experience for doctors and medical students. Our year-long anatomy course has demonstrated how this state-of-the-art technology can enhance the visualization of medical data, providing a richer and more immersive educational approach. Through this program, students gained hands-on experience, enabling them to effectively utilize this technology. Additionally, the various courses and workshops conducted within the project played a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge and skills related to MR to a wider audience. Why did you apply for this project? Our motivation to undertake the "Mixed Reality Supporting Advanced Medical Education" project was multifaceted. Firstly, we saw the vast potential of MR in transforming medical training by combining real and virtual experiences to create a holistic and safe learning environment. Next, given the challenges posed by global events such as pandemics that disrupted traditional on-site medical training, we aimed to find an alternative that ensures high-quality medical education regardless of external disruptions. The project also provided a platform for building strong ties with various European scientific and educational institutions. We firmly believe in the power of international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the realm of medical education. Another major driving force was our commitment to making medical training accessible to all, especially those who might be excluded from traditional modules due to various constraints. Finally, rooted in our philosophy is the idea that medical education should be in a constant state of evolution. This project provided an avenue for research, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of medical training methodologies. What were the needs you addressed? With this project, we set out to tackle several pressing needs in medical education. There was a clear requirement for a platform that allowed medical procedures to be practiced in a realistic yet risk-free environment. Our MR system was the answer to this, providing students and professionals with a venue to simulate procedures without any potential harm to patients. Additionally, with challenges like pandemics making on-site training increasingly difficult, there was a growing demand for effective remote training solutions. Our MR-based approach catered to this need by delivering immersive experiences irrespective of the student's location. Furthermore, considering the high costs associated with traditional medical training, our initiative offered a more cost-effective approach by leveraging virtual patients and MR simulations without sacrificing educational quality. Another significant aspect was empowering educators to harness modern technologies like MR for teaching, a gap our project sought to bridge. Lastly, we recognized the need for a more rounded training approach that covered not just procedural skills but also aspects like patient communication, diagnostic reasoning, and history-taking, all of which our MR modules incorporated. In conclusion, by applying for this project, we aimed to spearhead a revolution in medical education, addressing contemporary challenges and ensuring that the next generation of medical professionals is trained with a blend of traditional wisdom and modern innovation.
