The Hole In The Sock Refocus project was created in the minds of young people who created the idea and name in 2011. Their motivation was a meeting with migrants from Somalia and Syria, whom they met in London during the implementation of The Hole In The Sock Of Emigration project in exile in 2016, who co-created the previous design. The stories they learned about the drama of escaping from war, the problem of assimilation in a new society in England and how despite these difficulties these young people are doing very well in adulthood. That is why this time the youth undertook to implement the subject of the refugee problem, finding support in organizations supporting youth initiatives and providing assistance to the needy. The goal set by the initiative group is to create a film as an educational tool, thanks to which they will be able to provide the whole world with the knowledge they have gained but also a picture of the problem seen through their eyes. A picture without distortion and stereotypes as they see it, feel it and understand it. This project is to be not only a tool for the development of the implementing group, but also to help children and youth struggling with the problem of refugee thanks to the opportunity given to them to convey their thoughts and emotions to the world by co-creating our project and a tool for global education on this difficult problem.
The main goal was to create an educational tool in the form of a film regarding the perception of migration issues during the war crisis. This aspect is often overlooked when considering the understanding of this global problem. The youth wanted to show in an objective way the situations faced by people affected by the war crisis and refugees. We wanted to clearly emphasize through the film that both Poland and Greece help foreigners, but in different ways, and that these differences are influenced by various factors, but primarily geographical factors. Thanks to the project, we wanted to change the stereotype that there is intolerance and lack of understanding in Poland and to change the stereotype about refugees. We wanted to show refugees as young, active people who, like each of us, have their own problems and experiences, but also have dreams, plans and empathy for other people. In addition to deepening their knowledge about the problem of migration and the war crisis, direct participants could develop their understanding of the diversity of the world and get to know the true face of this global problem, build their value system on broadly understood intercultural perspectives and deepen their film-making and language skills.
The creators of the project are people at risk of socio-economic exclusion, coming from an environment at risk of demoralization, often with low competences and low self-esteem, but at the same time they are young people who, in cooperation with our organizations, would like to change the world for the better. Based on this, we focused our activities on the need to change the stereotype of excluded youth who, in the eyes of many people, cannot do anything worthy of respect or attention. In this topic, we also implemented our two previous projects called "The Hole in the Sock and "The hole in the Sock of emigration", which proved the importance of including young people with fewer opportunities in social activities. Our project also responds to the lack of understanding of the real problems of refugees. and local communities that are faced with this problem, and thus their discrimination. We saw the need to verify stereotypes about the problem and show refugees as cool, normal people. We noticed that the topic of the migration problem is becoming a marginal topic that is talked about less and less the youth who created their group "The Hole In The Sock" in 2010 decided to talk about these difficult topics through film.
