Project summary

We are concerned about an increasing problem of obesity and overweight among children and adolescents. The reason for this is the reduction of daily physical activity, mechanization and computerization of basic activities as well as the consumption of processed food. In our partner schools we have observed the problem of avoiding physical education by obese and less fit teenagers, their lower self-esteem, helplessness and exclusion from the peer group. We are sure that by offering them a number of health-promoting and attractive physical activities without rivalry and assessments, including their parents in these activities, we will change their lifestyle. Main objective: Increasing the number of students systematically undertaking physical activity and eating in a healthy way. It is divided into 9 specific objectives: Increasing health awareness of children, teachers and parents Creating suitable conditions for students to undertake attractive and various forms of physical activity in a safe and joyful atmosphere Reduction of fear of physical activity among less fit and obese children Motivating parents and children to spend time actively Increasing teachers' competences in their role as health promoters Increasing awareness of the purpose of PE classes among teachers of this specialty Teaching students how to make reasonable consumer decisions Introducing changes in the diet of children and adults in accordance with the principles of healthy eating Increasing self-esteem of less fit students Participating in the project by students aged 11-13, their parents, teachers and school staff. 1. Children who come from families where proper nutrition guidelines, even basic ones, are not followed 2. Children who have little knowledge about healthy food. They cannot make a proper choice of products with beneficial effects on health 3. Children who avoid physical activity and lead a sedentary lifestyle. They spend a lot of time playing computer games in the virtual world 4. Children, whose parents or mentors organize many additional activities, so they have too little time for active physical games 5. Teachers of various subjects to enrich their competences, expand their workshop 6. Parents who are the first to shape their children's health attitudes 7. All other school employees who are involved and interested in health-related topics of the project There are activities planned in the areas of : physical activity (attractive physical activities) healthy eating habits (workshops with a dietitian, culinary classes, competitions) healthy lifestyles (workshops with a psychologist, diabetologist, BMI calculation, relaxation techniques). We will make the achievement of project goals through quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Using ICT tools, we will conduct an initial online diagnosis using a survey among students participating in the project and in the control group. Conducting a survey at the beginning of the project and at the end will allow us to compare the obtained data. In the final phase, we will look for changes in the lifestyle of project participants and the control group. We will also present to the school community various artistic works prepared and related to the subject of the project. Students participating in the project will get a Passport to Health in the form of a booklet. They will conduct a personal health plan and collect stamps in their booklets by taking part in health-related activities. The final evaluation survey will summarize the students' health attitudes. We will examine the satisfaction of participating in the project, increased awareness and skills in caring for health. We will obtain tangible and intangible results. Project-related activities will certainly contribute to the long-term development of schools in introducing a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to various activities, students will be aware of the importance of taking care of health and how to achieve the intended goal. The project activities will be undertaken by students, teaching staff as well as other people cooperating with the school community like parents or school employees in the atmosphere of mutual support. Students will gain practical knowledge in three key aspects: physical activity, healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle. Interesting sports activities will be organized to suit the interests of students, thanks to which students and their relatives will open up to new forms of spending free time. Classes and workshops in the field of healthy nutrition, meetings with a diabetologist or interesting experiments will contribute to the development of awareness about consumer choices. Cooking classes about preparation of healthy meals will encourage students to prepare these dishes in their homes. Developed educational materials (videoblogs, cookbooks, lesson plans, charts, models, multimedia presentations) will remain in partner schools for a long time, so that they can be used repeatedly.

Final report summary

The project was a response to the alarming phenomenon of the epidemic of obesity and overweight among children and adolescents. The reasons for this situation are seen in the reduction of daily physical activity, mechanization and computerization of basic activities, and the consumption of ready-made, processed products. In partner schools, we have observed the problem of avoiding PE classes by obese and less fit teenagers, their lower self-esteem, helplessness and exclusion from their peer group. By offering them a number of health-promoting activities, attractive physical activities without competition and assessments, and by involving their parents in these activities, we have influenced the change of their lifestyle. General objective: Increasing the number of pupils systematically undertaking physical activity and eating in a healthy way has been divided into specific objectives: 1. Increasing health awareness among children, teachers and parents 2. Creating conditions for students to undertake attractive and diverse forms of physical activity in an atmosphere of safety and joy 3. Reducing of fear of physical activity among less fit and obese children 4. Motivating parents and children to spend time actively 5. Increasing the competence of teachers to act as health promoters 6. Increasing awareness of the purpose of PE classes among teachers of this specialisation 7. Introducing students to make informed consumer decisions 8. Introducing changes in the diet of children and adults in accordance with the principles of healthy eating 9. Increasing the sense of agency and self-esteem in students who are less physically fit The participants of the project were students aged 11-15 (including those with lower mobility, obesity, improper eating habits, spending a lot of time in front of the computer), their parents, teachers and school staff. Various activities were carried out in the area of physical activity (attractive physical activities, e.g. bicycle rallies, canoeing, rowing, trekking, aquaaerobics, drumming workshops), in the area of healthy eating habits (culinary shows and workshops, competitions) and in the area of healthy lifestyle (workshops with a psychologist, dietician, school nurse, introduction to the use of a pedometer, relaxation techniques). The results of the project were evaluated through quantitative and qualitative evaluation. We carried out an initial diagnosis using an online survey among the students participating in the project. The collected results showed the knowledge of the principles of healthy eating in the group of students, which did not translate into a change in eating habits. A large group of young people aged 13-15 declared their reluctance to participate in PE classes, which was also visible on the basis of the attendance analysis. In the study conducted in the final phase of the project, there was an increase in the interest of young people in issues related to a healthy diet. The beneficiaries declared that trying new products, cooking together with their peers, parents of new dishes, broadened their menu and increased their desire for fruit and vegetable products, not processed. In the area of physical activity, there is a visible increase in the frequency of physical activity during the week. There was also a slight improvement in the attendance of the project participants in PE classes compared to the control group. The survey of satisfaction with participation in the project indicated that the project activities were very attractive and well prepared. The sustainability of the project was ensured by enriching the equipment of the partner schools with tools for conducting movement and drumming classes Drums Alive, equipment for Nordic walking, aquaaerobics, Blazepod equipment for sports activities, kitchen equipment. In one of the schools, during the project, a kitchen workshop was created, where culinary classes are held on a regular basis. The project developed a collaborative cookbook that is also used by other students. As a result of the project, a presentation was also created with good practices in the field of developing students' physical activity, used in partner schools. It was presented during methodological meetings. The project participants also prepared a calendar containing health-promoting tips, which was also distributed to a group of students and teachers who did not actively participate in the project. During the Drums Alive drumming classes, performances were prepared, which were presented during school and local celebrations. These activities were also an opportunity to disseminate the results of the project.
