Objectives

Today's demanding world requires that the school provides the student with learning situations that enable them to acquire the skills necessary for true integration into society and the labour market. They acquire a lot of theoretical knowledge, but the transfer of what is learned in school to real life is low and not always the most effective. Moreover, that theoretical information is processed within a given subject area. It is necessary to know how to connect this information, so that students are able to use the knowledge acquired in a global way, creating the necessary conditions for them to develop essential skills such as critical and reflective thinking, collaborative work, communication skills, autonomy and perseverance in problem solving. With the implementation of this project, and with the objective of contributing to the development of this 21st century student, we intended to provide teachers with the acquisition and development of skills and tools on interdisciplinary education that would allow them to implement collaborative work, around a common project, developed by teachers from different subject areas, bringing together different perspectives towards the same goal.

Background

The few habits of interdisciplinary work, either because teachers adopt a more traditional teaching, or lack of knowledge in how to do it, led our school to feel the need to seek training in this area. Teachers needed to be equipped with tools and knowledge that would enable them to develop interdisciplinary projects with students, through which the latter could mobilise and apply what they learn to solve challenges and problems and, thus, transfer information from what they learn at school to real life. The world is interdisciplinary and teaching and learning should be too, to truly prepare the student for full integration into society. We also felt the need to internationalise our institution, to learn and share knowledge with other institutions and to develop the language proficiency of our teachers in foreign languages, providing them with opportunities to use English as a working and communicative language.
