This project was envisioned to tackle what bothers us as a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of active citizenship. It was based and built on our values - values of solidarity, equity and inclusion. We believe there is actually no "refugee crisis" - we prefer to see it as a political crisis that world leaders can solve together, and where every active citizen can help make it easier to solve, or at least be more aware of it. We keep working on it because we believe there is unfortunately still a need to push changing the narrative in Europe that too often talks about “us” versus “them”. Instead of this, we want to focus on ensuring more inclusive and democratic societies. Also, we believe in what Georges Dassis, the president of the European Economic and Social Committee says: "Civil society organizations have played a vital role in the recent migration crisis – civil mobilization has the force to change the course of history!" The topic of the project - empowering local NGOs to take an active role in the migrants’ integration/inclusion process at the time was chosen based on the analysis of partners' needs and problems in communities we all are working in. Our goal was to empower youth workers, managers and volunteers by equipping them with easy-to-use and adaptable tools and methods useful to fight discrimination and building a more inclusive society while promoting human rights and inclusion in an impactful way and by providing direct, personal contact with disadvantaged groups. This was done by introducing them to effective tools, such as the Human Library, Theatre of the Oppressed, SPEAK.social, and Guerrilla Marketing. Besides this, we worked with them on understanding the current situation migration-wise, but also the historical background, context and concepts, and different traps and issues when it comes to working with the topic. Originally, we defined the following four specific objectives of the activity/project and they were as follows: (1) providing participants with specific theoretical and practical knowledge (2) improving their skills and competencies (3) raising awareness of the local community about the current situation and the importance of moving towards a more inclusive society (4) using results of the TC to influence a broader audience (local communities of participants, other volunteers of partner organizations) Based on the final evaluations, reports of the participants and our findings, we conclude that all the objectives were reached during the activity, and hopefully, the effect of the training continued multiplying afterwards in the local communities of our local partners. Objectives (1) and (2) were reached by the implementation of a carefully curated program of the activity, using suitable methods of non-formal education and therefore creating an atmosphere where participants felt empowered and inspired to learn, question, grow and put ideas into action. A detailed description of the working methods used and for which purposes can be found in section 5- Activities. As for objectives (3) and (4) in our local community we reached this objective by organizing two impactful events - Human Library and a guerrilla marketing campaign on Inclusion - "Chains of Discrimination". Also, we presented in detail to the participants 4 powerful tools which can be used for raising awareness of the local community about the current situation when it comes to immigrants/refugees, and the importance of moving towards a more inclusive society so they can easily continue working on reaching the objective (3) and (4) in their own local communities. More about reaching these objectives can be found in section 8 -Impact.
