The youth exchange "Fighting Hate Speech" took place from 1-9 March 2023 at UAU Hostel in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. The project was organized by Youth Line Portugal, in collaboration with four partners from Bulgaria, Latvia, the Netherlands, Romania. The main objective of the project was to raise awareness and fighting hate speech, especially among young people, by promoting intercultural dialogue, understanding and acceptance. Through non-formal education methods, the project aimed to create a safe and inclusive environment where participants could share their experiences, thoughts and ideas, and develop their skills and knowledge on the topic. The youth exchange involved a total of 35 participants, with each partner sending seven representatives consisting of one group leader and six participants. The group leaders and participants facilitated the workshops and activities, and there were no external experts involved in the project. The project consisted of a diverse range of sessions and activities, including workshops on team building, communication, active listening skills, and the impact of hate speech on individuals and communities. Participants also had the opportunity to explore Figueira da Foz and learn about local culture and history through a visit to a museum and surfing lessons. Specifically, we had several objectives for this youth exchange: 1) To raise awareness about hate speech, its forms, and its impact on individuals and communities. 2) To promote a better understanding of different cultures and perspectives, and to encourage dialogue and mutual respect. 3) To develop strategies for responding to hate speech, both online and offline, and to promote positive, constructive communication. 4) To provide participants with the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills, such as intercultural communication, teamwork, leadership, and project management. 5) To increase the visibility of the Erasmus Plus program and the opportunities it offers to young people. 6) To create a network of young people and organizations that are committed to fighting hate speech and promoting intercultural dialogue. To achieve these objectives, we planned a diverse and engaging program of activities, including workshops, team-building exercises, intercultural evenings, outdoor activities, and visits to local NGOs and cultural sites. We also invited experts in the field of hate speech, online communication, and intercultural dialogue to facilitate some of the workshops and share their knowledge and experience with the participants. The project also aimed to promote the Erasmus Plus Program, Youthpass and Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, and encourage participants to become more involved in youth projects and initiatives. Throughout the youth exchange, participants had the chance to reflect on their experiences and learnings, and develop strategies and skills for responding to hate speech and promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding. Overall, the project was a great success, with all objectives met at the highest level. Participants were highly engaged and motivated throughout the project, and feedback from both participants and group leaders was overwhelmingly positive. The youth exchange provided a valuable opportunity for young people to come together, share their experiences and ideas, and develop their skills and knowledge on an important topic. We are confident that the skills and knowledge gained by the participants during the project will have a lasting impact and contribute to a more inclusive and tolerant society.
