Project summary

The project aims at promoting European values such as equality, tolerance and social inclusion among pupils aged 9 to 15 y.o. and to stimulate their intercultural, social and artistic behavior through thematic activities. A number of 108 pupils will be directly involved in 3 short term exchanges of 5 days of learning, in which they will experience non-formal activities related to artistic expression, recycling and manufacturing in order to increase their independent life abilities, creativity and openness towards other cultures. The 6 accompanying teachers will benefit from the project too as they will increase capacity to better integrate in own school non-formal learning activities to support pupils in their educational path, with the final goal to increase their performance, to strengthen a feeling of „citizens of Europe” and to reduce the risk of early school leaving. As a result of the implementation of this project, the 3 school partners will increase capacity to better implement E+ projects and to cooperate at international level. The project „Unity in Diversity – EU values hold us together” is implemented by a consortium of 3 schools from Romania, Italy and Turkey. Each partner school will host 1 mobility. Activities organized during the 3 short term exchanges of groups of pupils will combine theory with practice and with reflection sessions for a better internalization of the learning process. Activities will include: presentations, discussions and brainstorming sessions about European Union and European shared values like solidarity, tolerance, non-discrimination, human rights and social inclusion; carnival, puppet show, egg/ceramic pots painting and pottery workshops, intercultural moments and study visits. Each school partner will realize an Annual Plan for designing and integrating non-formal activities in own school. After the finalization of the short term exchanges, the pupils accompanied by teachers will organize one large dissemination event in the community and two thematic workshops inside their school. The project will benefit of a large number of stakeholders and associated partners to disseminate the results achieved.

Background

European Union is facing an unprecedented crisis of the European identity, culture and values in a context in which nationalist, populist and extreme right trends have grown. The results of the last elections in many European countries, the weaknesses shown by EU countries in managing decisions for integration of refugees, the failure of world’s influential political leaders in cooperating in most important aspects of human lives and of our planet such as civic wars, nuclear weapons, climate changes, are the biggest challenges of the world of today. Europe is facing a crisis, one induced mainly by nationalist and anti-democratic movements and in this context Europe needs a renaissance, a re-affirmation of its values and of the „European Project”. In an open letter issued a few days ago (March 2019), Emmanuel Macron the president of France, addressed to European citizens saying that „Never since the Second World War has Europe been so essential. Yet never has Europe been in such danger. We can’t let nationalists with no solutions exploit people’s anger.”(https://qz.com/1565407/emmanuel-macronsopen-letter-to-europe-has-five-key-proposals/). In this context, how can individuals themselves identify with Europe? What is the meaning that European Union have for someone who is almost never exposed to other cultures and who is tributary to nationalist movements or propaganda? There is either no meaning at all or a distorted one. European identity and European values built on democracy, non-discrimination of the weak, the poor, the one who is different, on social inclusion and solidarity must be cultivated from a very early age. Children need to be exposed to intercultural dialogue, to exploring other cultures and traditions and to exercising empathy and solidarity with all. Children spent about 20 years of their life in school. There is no question on the fact that education is essential. Education in the first years of a child life, from 3 to 14 y.o, is the most important because of two reasons: 1) these are the years when the foundations are created and 2) school drop out is increasing after the age of 14 when pupils should go to highschool. That is why, educating pupils in this age range, in the spirit of tolerance, solidarity, non-discrimination and unity in the same Europe, is the first step that we can do. In the preparation phase of this project, we have worked together with all partners and conducted a needs analysis outlining the common needs at school level, community and target group level. Direct TG were 108 pupils aged 9 to 15 y.o from the 3 partner schools. Indirect TG were 6 accompanying teachers, other 120 teachers (from own schools and other schools), other 300 pupils (from own schools and other schools), 240 parents/relevant stakeholders. 1. Needs of the pupils: - Increase knowledge about EU and European values with focus on social inclusion, non-discrimination, equality, intercultural dialogue; - Increase school performance, self confidence, improve independent life abilities in order to reduce the risk of early school leaving. 2. Needs of the teachers&school community: - Gather new ideas about how to combine formal with non-formal education in order to make school more attractive and to increase the school performance of pupils with poor results and reduce the risk of early school leaving; - Improve abilities in working with disadvantaged pupils through non-formal activities; - Strengthen the relation school-family-pupils by involving more the parents/family in school base activities. 3. Needs of the partners and project teams: - Increase capacity to implement E+ projects and to bring more such projects in the schools; - Increase capacity on using e-Twinning and on implementing further e-Twinning projects; - Improve knowledge about E+ in general, and about how to increase the impact on beneficiaries, organization and community; The aim of the project was to promote European values such as equality, tolerance and social inclusion among pupils aged 9 to 15 y.o. and to stimulate their intercultural, social and artistic behavior through thematic activities. The main purposes of this project were: -to make school more attractive for students that are likely to abandon school; -to promote values such as social inclusion, non-discrimination, and equality regarding minorities, children living in single-parent families, or in families with precarious financial conditions; - to offer children a chance to explore some of Europe’s geographical and cultural areas and to strengthen a feeling of „citizens of Europe”; - to motivate them to study continuously and understand that studying opens the door to a much better future.
