Objectives

In this project we wanted to learn about the teaching of literature in a school in Germany, to see how and in what way they work with the teaching of literature. We wanted to learn about methods used by them and compare this to how we work with literature in Sweden. We wanted to learn more about how to support students at different levels of their reading and how to develop their reading skills, both for learners as a first language, second language and learners of foreign languages. We also wanted this project to blend into the process of collegial learning at our school, where teachers work together in learning processes about eg. reading and writing. We have started and will continue to share our experience and what we have learnt during this mobilty with our colleagues in the collegial learning groups.

Background

We are all language teachers and interested in the teaching of literature and language. We have seen that students tend to read less and less literature and that it has become more and more difficult to motivate students to read literature. We wanted to go to a school in another European country, Rottmayr-Gymnasium in Laufen in Germany, to see how they work with literature because we know that in Germany literature has an important role in their education. Reading skills are very important in today's society and the reading of literature plays an important role in developing students' understanding of texts and also the surrounding world.
