Objectives

In youth exchange took part participants from 6 countries (Sweden, Turkey, Lithuania, Germany, Italy, Poland). Through the activities the participants were encouraged to interact with their peers representing other countries and cultures, to explore the situation in these countries and to become more aware of the stereotypes and prejudices which they had towards each other. Youth exchange “I am a Book” met its objectives. We and our partners created the project with aim to contribute to creating a socially inclusive society free of stereotypes, prejudices and hate speech. We set the following objectives: a) To develop participant’s competencies in the area of human rights education and the methodology of human libraries; We believe that the participants increased their knowledge in the field of human rights. They had the opportunity to reflect on terms such as social exclusion, discrimination, stereotypes, hate speech. They explored the roots of social exclusion and discrimination through simulation. They shared own experiences of being stereotyped and/or of being discriminated. They got to know the methodology of human library and had the chance to organize ‘human library’ by themselves. b) to raise participant’s knowledge on the process of realization of human library as a way of addressing stereotypes, prejudices and fighting discrimination; While exploring the topic of social exclusion, discrimination and getting to know the methodology of human library the participants had the possibility to raise their understanding on human library as a way of addressing stereotypes and prejudices. They got to know the challenges linked with organizing human library and addressing such sensitive topics as stereotypes and discrimination as well as the impact of human library on its participants (the books and the visitors). c) to empower the participants to contribute to creating a socially inclusive society through the process of organizing ‘human library’ during the youth exchange; The participants organized by themselves ‘human library’ during the days of youth exchange. They had the opportunity to share their personal stories e.g. My Palestinian Love, Becoming Vegetarian/Vegan, being a Child of Depressed Father or Overcoming Health Issues. They had the opportunity to reflect on their participation in human library as the books as well as the visitors. e) to develop participants competences such as teamwork, leadership, communication, presentation and to contribute to their personal and professional development; During youth exchange the participants took part in a variety of activities such as discussions, presentations, simulations. They had an opportunity to work together with the participants representing other countries in smaller or bigger groups. They had a space to give/receive feedback. We believe that youth exchange was for the participants an opportunity to develop their personal competences and become more self-confident to share opinions, to take part in the discussion. f) to raise intercultural competencies of the participants by giving them an opportunity to interact and work with young people coming from different European countries and also local community from the hosting country;
