Objectives

The Youth Exchange “Give Peas a Chance” was based on the premise that moral progress and animal welfare are interconnected in a way that when a society can be compassionate and respectful towards other species, its members are to a greater extent predisposed to have respect for other people, leading to a society without violence or discrimination. Therefore, the project addresses veganism (opposition to animal exploitation), as a choice based on ethics, justice and compassion, with an intersectional approach, adjacent to other social values and opposing all forms of oppression and discrimination in society. The project included an APV and a Youth Exchange that took place in Chaves, Portugal and had the following objectives: - Explore the animal industries’ consequences, including the exploitation of animals and their impact on the planet’s ecosystems and environment; - Strengthen people’s connection with nature and animals, apace with raising awareness about our responsibility to other species, promoting more empathy and compassion towards animals, and understanding its correlation to human rights; - Promote intercultural dialogue and reflection on the role animals have in our cultures and how culture shapes our attitude towards animals, encouraging tolerance for different opinions and perspectives; - Develop critical thinking and promote a sense of initiative among young people about one’s actions, through reflection on how our day-to-day choices and habits have an impact on humans, animals and the planet; - Provide the tools and information to young people who want to make a change towards a more compassionate and sustainable living and decrease resistance to change; - Promote a sense of initiative among young people, demonstrating how their individual actions can make a difference and impact society, encouraging youth participation and active citizenship at different levels. A multi-perspective approach of intersectional veganism as a solution to include all groups of people and animals in our circle of compassion and respect links to the aims and objectives stated in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide 2020 through: - Promoting European values of respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality, pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice and solidarity. (p. 7); - Promoting critical thinking and a sense of initiative of young people, promoting diversity, and intercultural and interreligious dialogue. (p. 78); - Supporting learners in the acquisition of learning outcomes with a view to improving their personal development, their involvement as considerate and active citizens in society and their employability; enhancing the participants' foreign languages competence; and raising participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries, offering them the opportunity to build networks of international contacts, to actively participate in society and develop a sense of European citizenship and identity. (p. 31).
