Objectives

This project was intended to motivate young people to become more involved in their local communities, especially by taking action in the space of their city or village. We believe that the active use of public space allows increasing community participation. An active public space also acts as a social and cultural hub, a meeting point that gives room for socializing, learning and acquiring a better knowledge of the local community, its inhabitants and their identity in connection with the space. As a result of this belief we wanted to show the participants the different opportunities already available, as well as that they themselves have the power to create within their community. And thereby motivating them to explore concrete ways how they can make impactful contributions to their surroundings and make their voices heard. The active engagement could take different forms such as create and participate in interesting activities as sports, street art, cultural events, exploring nature or participating in traditional local festivals. Furthermore we wanted the participants to become more aware about inclusivity, teaching them about the connections between communal involvement and regional, national, even international issues regarding the lack of thereof. As this learning process was set within an international environment, the different cultural backgrounds of the participants were supposed to enrich the experience by letting them discover the differences and similarities between their countries, thus forcing them to pay closer attention to the unique characteristics of their home, city or region. Simultaneously an international environment promised an improvement of their English conversation skills, as well as the ability to reflect upon how their heritage impacts them, both necessary skills when opening conversations in a European context. Lastly, an increase of European values such as solidarity, democracy and friendship was also to be expected. With this project, we want the young participants to: -Become more involved with the city/region they live and become more aware of their role and importance for the local community as well as of how community involvement can have a bigger impact on a regional, national and international scale. - Develop an understanding of people with different backgrounds and cultures and develop a curiosity for what happens in the world. -Through working and learning together with a diverse set of people strengthening values such as solidarity, democracy, and friendship. -Discover creative ways of using and influencing the public space and see it as a sphere of positive action. -Become more interested in and making a habit out of creating and participating in outdoor and sports activities as part of a healthy, engaging and fun life-style
