Objectives

Through the project Our Carpathian Stories we wanted to explore and chronicle the stunning scenery and the cultural diversity of the Ukrainian Carpathians. The Ukrainian Carpathians is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets: a landscape of high mountain ranges and forests and lakes, where life beats to a different rhythm and where traditional practises of farming, husbandry and carpentry still prevail. But there is another dimension to the rural idyll: remote mountain campsites are often littered with rubbish, plastic bags and bottles pollute the rivers, and household rubbish is often simply burned without much thought for the impact on the ecosystem. We wanted to use outdoor activities and storytelling to engage with our human impact on the natural environment, and to raise awareness about the importance of conserving both the natural and cultural richness of this special region. Aim and objectives of the project: The aim of the project was to promote environmental awareness, sustainability and intercultural cooperation and tolerance through reflect on our relationship with the natural world. Outdoor activities and storytelling served as the frame for engaging with this aim. To achieve our aim the project had following objectives: - provide a series of participant-led workshops on the theme of storytelling and provide the space for them to experiment with different methods of storytelling (such as digital storytelling, storytelling through art, storytelling with the spoken word, storytelling through memes) - apply the methods and principles of experiential education to engage in a powerful outdoor learning experience in the form of a multi-day hike on the Chornohora mountain range - visit the local project space Xata Mysternia in the town of Babin where participants can learn about the local cultures and traditions of the Carpathian region - produce our own stories to reflect on the experience of spending two weeks in the Carpathians with and international group and to share these experiences via dissemination activities
