Objectives

The project Scrap Rattle & Roll is a youth exchange project where the groups will consist of young people with fewer opportunities (those with mental disabilities as well as those who come from difficult social backgrounds or those who have other personal circumstances which push them into an inferior social standing) as well as youth workers and students of special pedagogics. The idea for this project consists of an initiative from youngsters with mental disabilities who stay int Center Janeza Levca Ljubljana dormitory, their teachers and youth workers who work with them. These young people whom we have been working with for several years in connection to various projects and programmes have expressed a wish to work “with their hands” on one hand and to get out of their comfort zones and take part in international projects on the other hand. The youth exchange will take place between 9. 10. And 16. 10. 2020. The activities will begin and end in the capital of Slovenia -Ljubljana and the time between will be spent in Radlje ob Dravi. The main goals of this project are: - Encourage young people with fewer opportunities to increase the quality of their free time and to do something “with their own hands” - Empowering young people to be responsible towards their environment and to recycle and upcycle used object instead of throwing them away - To empower young people with better social skills such as teamwork, tolerance, respect for different opinions, taking initiative, making friends etc. The main aim is therefore to give an opportunity to young people (with fewer opportunities) to meet their peers from other European countries in order for them to pull of a youth exchange and to facilitate their own learning process (with the help of youth workers) and execute activities which are based in social justice. Young people are often labelled with being apathic and they do in fact often feel they lack opportunity to change anything that they have any power. We wish to prove them the opposite and we plan on achieving this through different social games and workshops (led by the participants themselves) which are based on recycling and reusing old materials and giving them a new purpose. For them to feel that they can create something with their bare hands from scrap materials and by connecting to each other in a safe and supportive environment. The latter is especially important for those who have difficulties forming connections with other people. In order to ensure the active participation of everyone, each partner – each group will facilitate one workshop of making things out of recycled materials. Young people wish to implement this project so that they can interact with their peers by doing something useful, to connect with them through the universal language of working for a common cause and so that they can share knowledge and experiences. These sort of activities offer them priceless life experiences and help them overcome the fear of the unknown and help them bring down stereotypes about people with different abilities. They also wish to address the issue of social exclusion and the lack of quality free time activities suitable to them. These things take away the possibility for them to have a long lasting sense of self-worth. They want to meet new friends and to hang out with them, to meer new cultures and to find both common grounds as well as to understand and respect their differences.
