Objectives

The idea of this project is inspired by similar outdoor education programs carried out in other countries. Water based experiential education programs have high learning results in terms of building life-skills in young people and improving skills such as communication, working in a team, building up self-development and resilience. Through "Create Paddle Ability" we would like to build knowledge and skills of the youth leaders of the partner organisations, in order to build capacity and be able to run water-based experiential education programs in our region. Our long-term goal with this project is to work towards running water based outdoor education programs for young people with disadvantaged background. Particularly Outward Bound Slovakia is aiming in the future to create unique learning opportunities for young people from school and NGOs we work regularly with to participate in water based activities, as a tool for social integration. Aim and Objectives of "Create Paddle Ability": The aim of the training course will be to develop youth workers’ skills and toolboxes for working with young people through experiential education methodology and in particular using water based activities as a strong tool for social inclusion. The training’s objectives are to: - Develop new skills for using with outdoor education and in particularly water based activities (kayaking, water based expedition) when working with disadvantaged youth - Create space for sharing best practices in the field of working with young people with fewer opportunities and social inclusion - Create space for practicing the acquired skills The training is designed to develop technical skills when working with outdoor activities and in the same time explore the possibilities for using them in the work with young people with fewer opportunities. It will be a platform to meet people, who are experienced in working with youngsters with fewer opportunities and people with outdoor education background. The official language of the training will be English, and the course will be facilitated by internationally certified trainers and specialists. The methodology which will be used during the program is nonformal education and experiential education through outdoor activities and more specifically waterbased activities (kayaking). The long term goal of the project is for the trained workers and youth leader to be able to implement water-based experiential learning programs with the aim of social inclusion on local level, in their own organisations and countries. Erasmus + Objectives: Promoting quality youth work. During the training course the youth leaders will be trained in using new for them methods of experiential education, in order to be able to work in a higher capacity with young people from disadvantaged background. They will adapt the newly learned methods and skills to the local environment and needs of the specific people, with whom they will be working after the project. Improving the level of key competences and skills. The direct results of the training course will be to develop the capacity of the partner organisations through increasing the competencies of their youth leaders, working or volunteering for those organisations. The indirect result will be the stage after, where the youth leaders will use the newly acquired skills in their work with youth. As we are aiming at youth workers an indirect result will be developing soft skills and competencies of youth from disadvantaged background. Internationalisation at the level of education and training: The project has an international dimension, as the partner organisations are from different European countries. The program will create a platform for exchanging best practices, ideas, networking and creating synergy between people working in the experiential and outdoor education fields and people working actively with youth with fewer opportunities. Issues and needs to address: Through this project we are reaching out directly youth workers, trainers, facilitators, social workers, volunteers, working with young people with fewer opportunities. The other target group, which will be reached indirectly, are young people from disadvantaged background (through the work of the youth leaders after the project, when implementing actions on local level). The need of the youth leaders, working with youth with fewer opportunities is connected to improving their professional skills and developing knowledge for new experiential education methods and more specifically water-based methods.
