Objectives

We wanted to carry out 'Youth Workers to become Mindful Leaders' Erasmus+ aimed to raise awareness and teach practical tools for youth workers regarding mindful leadership. We developed this project for the first application deadline for the year 2020. Mindfulness was the key focus area that all partners agreed to develop - at professional or personal levels, their youth workers were facing stress, anxiety and cases of burnout. Its link to leadership for youth workers lies in the practicality of how methods could be passed on or applied as a tool to be implemented in their work environment or for their own practice for self-empowerment. 'Youth Workers to Become Mindful Leaders' training course aimed to combine mindfulness concepts for youth workers to combat stress and learn more aligned methodical way to become better and mindful leaders. The impact was highly positive for our project target group at a personal and professional level, as well as their environment benefits. During the project, experiential and non-formal education based leadership and mindfulness practices were targeted to raise awareness, drive self-empowerment and help concentration. Target group of participants gained skills for personal development during the training’s processes, which enhanced their ability to become a balanced charismatic individuals that can lead better. As one of the important studies –'Understanding Burnout in Child and Youth Care Workers” of Sean W.Bardford and William J. Whleton indicates, human service occupations like youth workers are facing plenty of stressful and difficult situations by working with variety of target groups, mostly from difficult background (migrants, unemployed, rural area, problematic youth, teenagers, bullied students etc. – few examples from our partners). For these cases to be handled with good care, control and balanced state of mind. With this project we wanted to cater these needs of youth workers and share and learn practices for becoming mindful leaders. The importance of health, self-care and ability to focus better were some of the important outcomes that we wanted to promote and raise awareness on. With the introduction of mindful leader concepts and practices, our participants, partner and associate partners are foreseeing to become promoters and advocators of a physically and mentally more healthy society at personal, professional and their environment’s level. By learning such, the result we expected that the target group would become more self-aware, conscious and mindful leaders, knowing what matters and not, how to care more for their own and others wellbeing and how to handle critical and stressful situations. Objectives of our training were, 1. To equip youth workers with competences and methods for their professional and personal development; 2. To understand the concept and importance of conscious leadership in working with youth; 3. To understand the concept and acquire skills of mindful leadership to be used in anxious and stressful situations; 4. Firstly to experience and learn from creative theoretical and practical methods of mindful leadership through activities for self and youth empowerment; 5. To learn from exercises, how mindfulness, concentration, calmness and silence could be introduced to youth workers; 6. To boost skills and ability of self-directed stress reduction and consciousness raising techniques and their possibility of usage in non-formal education (NFE); 7. To promote Erasmus+ as a tool for modernised development of youth workers. The project has its relevance to the objectives of the Erasmus+: - Fosters the work done through the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2010-2018) especially in the area of health and wellbeing plus social inclusion, - More particularly, this project was in line with the specific E+ KA1 objectives: 1. In accordance with the Education and Training 2020 (ET 2020) Programme for cooperation in education and training by combating 5. Common challenges faced by partner organizations youth workers dealing with high level of stress and workload. As we applied for this project in 2020, this training course was also in line with 'EU's Youth Strategies 2020' -to sustain "health and well-being" - to promote mental health in youth work, sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness of how intercultural learning can help achieve these goals.
