Objectives

Objectives of the project were: • To learn about diabetes: what is it, its causes and consequences, which types there are and to learn and understand most important terms related to it • To share experience and “tips&tricks” about life with diabetes through open discussions • To raise the awareness about importance of prevention of diabetes in terms of controlling stress and eating healthy and support healthy habits by learning about and understanding dieting and stress management • To raise the awareness of importance of physical activity while learning about traditional sports and outdoor activities in the countries that are taking part in this project • To use creativity and develop materials (posters, videos, social media posts etc.) which will be used for promotion of the project, raising the awareness of the wider public about diabetes and to mark World diabetes day Main idea behind this project was to raise the awareness about diabetes among young people. This project was our answer to the needs identified by some of the participants of another Erasmus+ project implemented in Germany in 2019. Back then, some of the participants, including two with diabetes, realised it would be good to have a project on raising the awareness about diabetes. In that moment we knew we want to have this project and it was already applied in following deadline. We managed to bring together young people with and without diabetes from 5 countries to learn and share experience about living with diabetes, about food, physical activity and all the other important aspects which need to be considered while living with diabetes but also have it in mind if we want to prevent diabetes of happening. Our project aimed to address additional concerns we identified during its development, such as the rising number of people diagnosed with diabetes. We noticed that many of them are young people, with type 1 diabetes being the most common form, occurring typically before the age of 20 and requiring insulin dependence. Factors such as stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and genetic predisposition can increase the likelihood of diabetes diagnosis. Additionally, we discovered that each of us knew at least one person living with diabetes. While the main focus of the project was on its participants but we also wanted to use this project to raise the awareness of other people as well. For that we used our creativity and on the last day we were producing project outputs in form of posters, memes and other simple products that can be easily shared online and send a message we want to send. This was done on the last day so participants can use all the knowledge they gained to created quality outputs. One of the most crucial aspects of our project for its success was having participants with diabetes sharing their stories and experiences of living with the condition 24/7. Through this, we aimed to emphasize that living with diabetes is not a "death sentence," as some may assume, particularly in today's world where high-quality medicine and technology enable individuals to have same quality of life as those without diabetes. While living with diabetes can be challenging, we sought to highlight that with proper management and self-awareness, individuals can lead positive, fulfilling lives without any issues. Also, very important thing we learnt is that despite same diagnosis, there are no two same ways of managing diabetes or how diabetes is manifested – each participants with diabetes in this project shared their side of the story and all of them, although similar, were very much different at the same time. Intercultural aspect was also of significance. Through the implementation of this project, our goal was as well to learn about each other's cultures, languages, and ways of living. We placed great emphasis on the importance of diversity and aimed to address the issues surrounding acceptance and living with diversity in our communities and society at large. Although we had some intercultural challenges and misunderstandings during the project, it helped us to learn a lot and to develop our intercultural competences as well.
