Objectives

The main aim of Wind of Change was to enable youth workers to educate and empower young people to challenge racism and xenophobia in all its forms and guises whether at a local, national or international level. The ethos was that there was a need to act now and reach out to young people, the next generation, to promote learning, tolerance, reconciliation and equality. The training course examined these issues through the context of historical imperial and colonial legacies and associated migration. Six very disparate partners from Anguilla, Guadeloupe, Romania, Sint Maarten, Turkey and the UK, each with their own unique experience of these issues, were chosen to maximise the learning experience. Non-formal education and its compatibility with the sensitive subject matter, combined with a special focus on Human Rights Education, lay at the centre of Wind of Change. The project objectives of Wind of Change were: 1) To start to address the racism and xenophobia embedded in Europe and its Overseas Countries and Territories as a continuing legacy of colonial history; 2) To analyse the main reasons and results for the continuation and rise of racism and xenophobia in Europe and its Overseas Countries and Territories; 3) To rethink and dismantle the key concepts in racism and xenophobia such as stereotypes, prejudices, overt and covert discrimination; 4) To raise awareness of, and develop competences in, non-formal education as a tool to fight racism and xenophobia, including the creation of new tools; 5) To strengthen partnerships and establish networks between European Countries and their Overseas Countries and Territories for future learning and cooperation.
