Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and/or sex characteristics has no place in our society, but for many people in Europe, it is a daily reality. This project was built on the basis that there are many difficult circumstances, prejudices and discrimination for LGBTIQ+ young people which cause them to be more marginalised and therefore harder to reach, and particularly so when it comes to sport and physical activity spaces. Despite this, we know that youth work is a powerful tool to help reach them, and there are many different methodologies to do so and the participants in this project all have varying experiences of sport and outdoor activity methodologies that they have used in empowering ways with LGBTIQ+ young people. The project includes a single activity which is a mobility workshop and contact making activity for youth workers who use sport and physical activity to work with young people who are discriminated against and have fewer opportunities as a result of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and/or sex characteristics. The most significant things we wanted to achieve in the project were to strengthen knowledge, understanding and awareness of practice in this field. Our detailed specific objectives were: 1. To build upon a strong European wide network of LGBTIQ+ youth workers working within sport and physical activity 2. To build new networks and to establish new partnerships 3. To increase knowledge of education by and for sport and especially education through sport methodology 4. To further develop key competencies of youth workers through interpersonal interaction 5. To create a collaborative strategy for new project applications 6. To strengthen the European identity of youth and European level of LGBTIQ+ youth work A further objective to be realised through collaborations is: 7. To increase tolerance towards LGBTIQ+ identifying people throughout Europe The activity was designed to meet the project objectives by focusing on the following: - build the networks we require and strengthen the partnerships that we have developed; - spend time sharing practices and examples of work with LGBTIQ young people, paying particular attention to what works well and what doesn’t work well; - provide a degree of interpersonal interaction and relationship development activity that is conducive to the development of individual competences; - expand our knowledge and expertise on different ways in which sport and outdoor activity can be used to make this work happen; - begin the process of identifying new projects that we want to create together and then begin the collaborative work of putting together new applications to make this happen; - improve our own sense of identity within Europe and create a wider more integrated European community of people. A tangible ambition of the project was to create a minimum of 4 new projects as a result of the project, and we considered that with the number of partners and participants involved, this was an ambition that could be realised within the timeframe of the project.
