Objectives

"Building Rainbows: ART as a Mediator of PEACE" was a project that was hosted in Cyprus and involved participants from Cyprus, Greece, Poland, Spain and Bulgaria. The main concept of the project was the use of Art as a community endeavour and as well as how we can use non-formal education to creatively tackle some modern social issues that exist in our communities, countries and more generically in the continent. The main issue that was brought forward was one of inclusion, ethnic hate, sexism and other forms of discrimination, as well as indirectly bringing forward the issue of climate change. The project was indeed a huge success, and we managed to build a small community in just 8 days, with a group so bonded that they are still keeping in touch. The example of Cyprus was brought to the picture, in an attempt to use a real-life case study of conflict and conflict solving, and we managed to see More specifically our objectives included and were not limited to: -Creative forms of activism; -Art as a mediator and as a means of social change (this will include poetry, painting, movement and embodiment, visual arts, art through up-cycling and also space for alternative forms of expression); -Mindfulness and body movement; -Peace and peer education, as a means of exchanging knowledge; -Non-violent and peaceful communication; -Self-empowerment, self-development, positive psychology; -Sense of initiative, leadership, empowerment, and active participation that will directly target the boosting of their employability skills and awareness; -transforming ideas into a reality, through the process of creating a performance. During the project we encouraged the participants to come closer with group building activities, to express themselves using artistic means and media (theatre improv, painting, photography, videography, writing, illustration) and to create a collective piece of artwork that expresses the principles of unity, solidarity, altruism, coexistence and peace. Parallel with the activities we had an intercultural /European dimension and we reflected on European topics; offered participants the space and opportunity to identify common values with persons from different countries in spite of their cultural differences; challenged their current viewpoints that perpetuate inequality, discrimination and refreshed their perspectives with more contemporary approaches; we managed to promote the respect of cultural diversity and fight against racism. Importantly, targetted the boosting of the employability skills of participants through the workshops which will have as objectives the sense of initiative, confidence, sense of belonging and self-development. The YouthPass certificate can be also a tool for increasing employability skills as it can be an effective tool for monitoring and categorizing the learning outcomes and its importance will be stressed throughout the project.
