Objectives

This project successfully created a space where youth workers from all across Europe have been empowered to use 2 innovative methods: spoken word poetry and embodiment to foster social inclusion in the work with their target groups. As the wave of separatism, radicalism and extreme behavior is constantly increasing for the past decade in all our online and offline communities, we aimed at crafting a space for a different type of discourse: one based on values like self-exploration instead of fear and hate, community building instead of anxiety and isolation, honesty and creativity instead of bursts of violence and prejudice. Spokenword poetry and embodiment are 2 practical methods that directly cultivate these values. And as we found out, that’s why they are so impactful. Because of the stories they tell. Stories that include and unite, that underline that no matter how different we are, in the end, humans want the same things. The main problem that we focused on was that the youth workers are not equipped with effective methods to create real impact and foster the social inclusion of youth with vulnerable backgrounds. This is due to the fact that they: 1. Don’t renew their approach with knowledge of innovative and actual methods that enhance the expression of personal stories of individuals. And even if they find out new methods, they: 2. Don’t receive support to apply the newly acquired methodology into practical youth projects at a local level. 3. They don’t exchange or develop good practices in a network of professionals facing similar challenges. Therefore, our objectives were: • To train 24 youthworkers from 8 countries in using 2 innovative, practical and complementary methods (embodiment and spoken word poetry) as tools to tell personal stories and authentically connect people, besides labels and stereotypes. • To support them in creating local activities based on the newly acquired methods combined with the ones they already use. • To facilitate the exchange of effective practices in creating inclusive communities through personal storytelling methods. The 2 methods we used were innovative, practical and complementary. Embodiment: focus on body-based processes that allow deeper self-awareness and expression beyond the words. The power of embodiment comes from the fact that it is a universal language which brings us back to the basics. It is simple, creative, joyful and open for everyone. Spoken word involves performance-based poetry that focuses on the genuine approach of the author on different personal events and dilemmas. The art of spoken word has existed and enhanced connection for many millennia in different communities. Here we used it to support people expressing their life stories in a way that builds connection and defies discrimination and fast-judgement.
