The "Expanding Horizons" project was intended to awaken enthusiasm for European cooperation in children's and youth work. This was to be done in a modern and youth-oriented way. The project was aimed at volunteers in youth work who want to gain intercultural experience and develop a better understanding of European cooperation. Another goal was to encourage these participants to become actively involved in society and to take on responsibility. This was achieved through the joint planning and implementation of the project as well as through the targeted development of youth leadership skills. The project focused on building an intensive and sustainable partnership between the two youth organizations from Leichlingen and Funchal. The aim was to lay the foundation for future youth mobility measures. A strong cohesion within the group was to be created, which was achieved through experiential education elements and group games. The measures helped to create a strong sense of community among the participants. The project was also designed to teach participants methods and skills in the area of digital youth work. They were to learn how to reach and involve disadvantaged young people. This should make the young people more self-confident and take a more active role in the community. The project also promoted the development of English skills and European education, as English was used as the main language. This broadened the horizons of the young professionals, for example, by showing them the possibility of studying in another European country. An important aspect of the project was to provide advice on innovative approaches and modern organizational structures in open child and youth work. This was intended to help further develop international youth work. A particular focus was on the development of a sustainable extracurricular youth exchange program. Although the goal of developing a stand-alone concept for a sustainable out-of-school youth exchange program was not fully achieved, important steps were taken towards long-term cooperation and such a program. Despite organizational challenges and personal circumstances of the participants, the project is considered a success as it has fostered cooperation and understanding of European togetherness.
