Objectives

„Not same but equal” was an international youth project that took place from September 25th to October 3rd 2022 at Europahaus Aurich. Together with our long-standing partner organization from Spain, we supported 18 young people in approaching the topic of equality and related (political) questions, such as: Which socio-political debates are there in the project partner countries regarding equality? Our aim was to encourage the participants to deal with these questions jointly and at the same time independently. One focus was, how the current state of equality affects different aspects in the participating countries and beyond and what each individual can do to reduce inequality and to enable all people to live an equal life.. Another aim was to enable young people to work out ways independently, in which they can influence current developments. They were supposed to recognize that they are the ones who can and must take responsibility for the(ir) future, right now. For the implementation of these project goals, the participants focused on creative work on the topic and organized themselves democratically into workshop groups, which enabled them to find different forms of expression for their thoughts. Among other things, they created posters, displaying their demands, which they then presented in a creative and scenic way. Despite their enthusiasm, the participants also developed critical perspectives. The fears and uncertainties that the young people had initially expressed and collected regarding the topic of ‘inequality’ could not be resolved entirely through working on this topic. Even after the meeting, it was clear to everyone involved that task that there is still a long way to go until complete equality for everyone is achieved that can only be accomplished together. At the same time, however, they were satisfied to have clarified what was important to them personally and what expectations they have towards themselves, but also towards their political decision-makers.
