Facing a global pandemic crisis, local engagement is, nowadays, more than ever proven to consist the most fundamental and motivating field for taking small steps towards a universal shift, where local, national and international difficulties are confronted with personal and common will and effort. Under that scope, Social Innovation practices have flourished within the EU during the past decade, with evidence that Social Innovation (SI) can “transform society in the direction of a more participative arena where empowerment and learning are sources and outcomes of well-being”. Highlighted through this is the self-organized community development trend, where bottom-up local initiatives and activities establish and strengthen durable relations between members of a local community, providing a safe space for processes of shared decision-making. It is beyond doubt that young people can be at the heart of these solutions, as change agents who can bring a fresh, creative and innovative approach and gain and train different and new skills and talents as to impact their own lives and the lives of the other individuals, organizations and communities. After discussing the situation with our partners, youth workers, participants, stakeholders and young individuals, we realised that young people can easily feel lost in the action process and lose motivation and awareness. Some of them may have access to fewer opportunities, a fact that makes their challenges even bigger. To this aim and with respect to Erasmus Plus and Key Action 1 for the field of Youth as well as the annual priorities of the Greek N/A, “Beehive” Youth Exchange is a youth empowerment project that means to enhance young people’s competences and to promote the self-actualisation/influence and the collective, democratic, and pro-social process of engagement. Participants being involved in the non-formal learning community of “Beehive” will be encouraged to collaborate in order to feel more attached, dedicated and motivated to take action as well as to focus on real micro-world issues which are part of their everyday lives. It is highly prioritized that they feel inspired to boost and support little actions, since it is such little actions that have a real impact, not only on a personal level, but also concerning their micro-world, i.e. their community and subsequently the world in its larger scale. Under the Erasmus Plus umbrella, “Beehive” Youth Exchange means to empower and motivate 35 young people and five organisations (Active Youth, Pulpo de 5 Patas, EQuality, INclusion and Svoura) with different backgrounds and needs to be more active in their local communities, facing daily issues through the Social Innovation spectrum and youth activism dynamics. Bringing locality into the spotlight of Beehive’s diverse learning community in Thessaloniki, we urge young people from bee-five countries (Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Italy and Greece) to take on an active and determining role in the formation and function of local societies, by creative means of Social Innovation and youth activism. Within the course of eight days, the Beehive “self-organised” community will co-organise and carry out creative and empowering workshops, will exchange international experiences, ideas, practices and tools around local issues and youth activism, and will collaborate nationally and internationally for innovative solutions through Social Innovation Bee Labs. We will all together perform a collective bee-dance towards the innovative production of honey, i.e. an efficient, engaging, functionable and active everyday living and cohabitation. The objectives that have been set are the following: O1: Develop young participants’ competences on creative and critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, digital literacy, teamwork, initiative and innovation. O2: Engage participants in the creation of the self-organised, multicultural and international learning community of Beehive. O3: Enhance participants’ civic engagement and activism addressing local communities’ issues, potential solutions and networking. O4: Introduce and reinforce the practice of Social Innovation means and tools within the local level by designing solutions under national and international collaboration. O5: Boost the exchange and development of creative practices for youth empowerment, civic activism of youth, digital youth work, Social Innovation for local issues and networking among international youth organisations.
