In general, the younger generations seem to have difficulties interacting empathetically, mainly due to their attachment to technology. As a result, people focus on the present moment less and less. The accelerating pace of life in modern societies, in combination with the new technologies, though aiming to speed up the process of communication, usually have the exact opposite result, making us forget that having some private time to relax, reflect and focus on our thoughts and emotions, without judgement, is also important. The need to adopt a more mindful approach to life is even more urgent in the recent time, during this never foreseen pandemic outbreak. Now that all national authorities suggest social distancing and all of us face the need for prolonged stay at home, as well as the uncertainty that this health crisis created, both for our health, and employment and economy in general, it becomes ever clearer that we need to disconnect and log out of our social lives, and create meaningful connections with our emotions and the present time. “The Mindfulness Project” is a Youth Exchange, created due to the initiative taken by Young people from 7 different countries across Europe (Greece, Sain, Italy, Latvia, Sweden, Poland, Croatia), aiming to further Mindfulness and promote the need to focus in the present moment. Through the process of Non Formal Education, the Exchange aims to expose participants to new stimuli, show them a new approach to everyday life and help them reconnect with nature and adopt a more mindful approach. Through group conversations and exercises, as well as hands-on activities, the 37 participants will learn and connect with the concepts of mindfulness, presence in the moment, mindful communication, observation and awareness, both regarding their environment, but also their, and others’, feelings. The main objective of the project is to help Young People approach, through discussions, experiential exercises and introspective exercises, the concept of mindfulness, and experience some of the benefits it can offer (such as enhanced communication skills, emotional awareness, better response to stress factors etc). Also, they will have the opportunity to retrospect and evaluate how they manage technology and distractions in general, and through those realisations they will be more able to manage them better, enhancing, this way, performance, concentration, and effectiveness, therefore enhancing, among others, their professional efficiency. By the end of this Youth Exchange, the participants will feel that they have a better and more mindful connection with themselves, everyone around them, and nature. They will be aware of their feelings, and treat those with more respect and without judgement. “The Mindfulness Project” aims to offer personal, social, and educational development to the young people participating in it, through their active participation, especially for young people, coming from backgrounds offering fewer opportunities. Through the general respect that mindfulness, awareness, and presence in the moment teach, we hope that our Programme will affect the participants long term, and that it will create social changes in a broader sense. The participants will carry those new approaches and behaviors back in their communities, and will act as multipliers for the knowledge gained during the youth exchange. Each and every one of the participants, as they become more mindful, in their everyday life, will become a factor of social change, because with their new approach to life they will mark a new “model”. They will inspire, and become ambassadors of mindfulness, both in their organisations, but also in their communities, helping, this way, towards the achievement of the vision for a more mindful, active European society, with better understanding and respect. Finally, we aim to give them the motivation to become more active in their participation in similar European activities in the future (both in a international, as well as in a local level), having as a motivator the fulfillment they feel during this particular project.
