We developed this project as a response to the need to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion of people with disabilities. Nikoleta Kouli attended a training course in Poland in December 2019 funded by the Erasmus+ program. She met Michail Chatzimimikos and Alexandra Chatzimikou (members of her sending organization, Youth Empowerment Center). When she returned to her national reality, she shared her international experience with her peers, who became immediately interested in having similar international experiences while addressing issues that affect them as young people. Together we brainstormed and concluded that a significant social issue affecting us as young people is a lack of awareness among young people in our area about socially excluded target groups. We decided to pay special attention to the people facing any kind of physical and/or mental disabilities. We took into consideration the possibilities we have for people with disabilities such as no infrastructure for free movement, lack of organizations and support for these groups, as well as the attitudes and behaviors of the society by excluding people with disabilities. Also, this issue is exceeding our borders and we can say it is a challenge in many other societies. The objectives of the project were: -Raise youngsters’ awareness on the phenomenon of social exclusion and discrimination -Examine the situation of individuals with disabilities and the difficulties which they experience in enjoying access to employment, education, training and leisure activities. -Foster a network of young and motivated youngsters who will be willing to address and combat the phenomenon of discrimination and social exclusion, with special focus on individuals with disabilities, on their realities -Increase the awareness and understanding of the local community of Arta on embracing the differences and showing a more empathetic and solidary approach on individuals with special needs.
