To be or not to Be... able" project was originally planned to be a 12 months project leading to two three day Study Visits (SV) first to Italy and then to Finland. The goal of the Study Visits was to share and learn new ways of working with young people who are on the autistic spectrum and/or have mental health issues. Because of the coronavirus pandemic only the first part of the project was completed and the second study visit (Italian organization visiting Finland) was applied as its’ own project. It took almost three years after the first projects study visit before the organisations were able to carry out this originally planned second action. On this project the Italian partner Don Giovanni Zanandrea Onlus visited The Finnish association Nuorten Ystävät. During the Study Visit the youth workers' learned formal and non formal methods to empower personal and social development on people with disabilities and/or mental health issues and also a lot about the social support system in Finland. Both organisations learned about the cultural differences in each country. In Finland society has a large role in supporting young people with special needs. The Italian society on the other hand is much more family centered and it is usually up to the family to support their young people. The main object of this project was to find new ways of supporting young people with special needs, and especially young people who are on the autistic spectrum. These young people are usually in a more vulnerable position when compared to other young people of their age. Second objective of this project was try to find new ways of doing international co-operation with the young people on the target group of this project. This ties up with a Strategic Project which the two partners are part of, along with four other organisations. Its’ aim is to make international co-operation more accessible to young people with special needs. The methodology of this whole project was inspired by the Empowerment concept, literally “to give power”. This refers to a process of growth and development, meaning an increased ability to successfully manage one’s own personal life, in terms of choices and actions). Working in the field of disability is sometimes really stressful and it is important for workers working in these fields to find new energies, solutions and motivation. In this Study Visit the organisations also visited services that are aimed to young people, who are in very challenging situations and this brought a perspective to the participants own work. The study visit brought new perspectives to the participants, how Europe is sometimes very different and also similar. Similar ideas pop up in different countries but are often handled in different ways. It is very important for people who work with the target group of this project to see different approaches and methodology in approaching people with different disabilities. The NEEDS and ISSUES tackled by these two projects were from the beginning a: To support personal and professional development of adult workers thanks to a European perspective on their field of expertise To raise participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries with a special focus on different behaviours with disable people To offer adult workers the opportunity to build networks to establish future common projects in the field of disabilities and special needs support (ex. exchange of good practices)
