Environment and climate change

Objectives

The Hameau de Vaunières is an international reception center that has been organizing exchanges of young Europeans since the establishment of the Erasmus + program. This year we wanted to offer a youth exchange related to environmental and climate change awareness. It was then a question of working on the question of waste. The Vaunières reception center is a former abandoned hamlet which has been renovated over the years by groups of young people, as part of worksite activities. As a reception centre, we want to reconcile environmental protection and tourism development. To do this, we strive to reduce our environmental impact on a daily basis: construction and renovation using methods and materials that respect the environment; food charter for responsible consumption and cooking; waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting; etc Within the European Union, the question of waste today appears to be a real challenge. Beyond the new recycling targets adopted in June 2018 (recycling 55% of municipal household waste by 2025 and 70% of packaging waste by 2030), the European Union has, for example, prohibited access to the market to several disposable plastic objects, since 2021. Young Europeans are increasingly aware of the ecological crisis, many people are committed to the issue of waste, as shown by the creation of the Zero Waste association Europe in 2013, whose network includes several hundred European cities. It is now necessary to consider waste not as rubbish, but as resources to be recovered. This is highlighted by the ecological method of the 5 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Rot (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, compost), which has been the common thread for our youth exchange. This project led the participants to create together, express their cultural differences but also (and above all), collectively seek what brings them together, regardless of their origins and their individual backgrounds. We wanted to enable young people to understand what the European Union is and thus contribute to the fact that they feel like European citizens. The general objectives of the project were: - Allow young people to build a reflection on the issue of waste - Raising young people's awareness of environmental protection, in particular through the reduction, reuse, recycling and composting of waste - Make young people aware of diversity by offering them the opportunity to live a collective experience within an international reception center - Accompany young people in the development of knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills, thanks to living together and doing together - Promote the involvement of young people in the dissemination of the project, through the organization of a cultural event
